  • MK5 R32 Taillight bulb replacement

    Hey guys,

Recently, my rear left brake light went out and I'm in need of a replacement bulb.

Now, I've looked through the manual but it doesnt seem to have any information about what kind of bulb I need.

Did a google search but not much luck there either...

If anyone can help me out, that'd be great!

    Thanks

    Lol

The bulbs in these cars use a special type of iridium for the filement. The cost between 15-23k your car is a write off.

    Lol jokes

Pull the globe out and have a look.

I have a MkV 2.0 TDI but I doubt it's much, if at all different to your R32, taillight-wise.

Pull the bulb out, drive to your automotive parts store of choice (e.g. supercheap auto, repco, etc) and poke around the bulb section till you find a suitable replacement. I think it's a 12W ba15 or something like that. Or maybe it's 21W... I can't remember.

It's not hard to take out. Open the felt flap covering the back of the lamp, inside the boot area, disconnect the wire and undo the two black plastic-coated nuts that hold the taillight on. Remove the tail light from the back of the car and you'll be able to remove the actual bulb holder. it's clipped onto the back. Identify the blown bulb (usually from the soot inside the bulb) and remove by pushing down and twisting it anticlockwise to release it from the holder. Be gentle. If it doesn't budge without much effort, you're doing it wrong. Reverse these instructions to re-assemble.

P.S. the wattage of the bulb will be embossed on the metal casing of the original bulb.

If you're still lost, ask the staff to assist. You might get a funny or perhaps condescending look and a smirk if the particular staff member is a bit snooty but you gotta learn sometime...

For those of you playing at home, they take a 21W single filament incandescent bulb

TTT on this one - and maybe a sticky too as it relates to all Mk5 tails?

fwiw, just did this on a MY08 TDI and it is the same (as you'd expect). Took me all of 2 mins and is dead easy.

Anyone with a screwdriver, 10mm socket and 2 mins to spare that takes this to a workshop to get done deserves to pay whatever they get charged. it literally is like changing a globe.

Still deserves a beer after doing the light change though

By the way, there should be a spanner in the boot with the car jack and spare wheel that fits the nuts that hold the light in place.
