  • Wiring options for Defi racer boost gauge

    Most of the DIY's out there wire up all 3 power cables to the fusebox for the Defi racer boost gauge. There are 3 power wires from the gauge. Switch/permanent/illumination. Has anyone wired it up to the dimmer on the head light switch? Would it work if I wire switch/permanent to the fusebox and tap illumination to the headlight?

    Yes this will work, I have my defi racer linked to my headlights and dims perfectly

      I tested it out yesterday and for anyone who wants this setup, here's what I did. The boost gauge installation part is pretty straight forward (plenty of DIYs out there). This is the confusing bit, the wiring.

      1) Using a multimeter, i tapped into all the fuses to check where the constant and ignition 12V power source.


      2) I tapped into the fuses using 10amp fuse tap that I bought from Jaycar Electronics. About 7 bucks each.


      3) The top fuse is the red constant 12V wire and the bottom fuse is the orange ignition on 12V wire.


      4) Then the white wire is tapped into the headlight switch (grey wire).


      Results: Left picture, max brightness (headlights off)
      Right picture, medium brightness (headlights on)
      Apologies for the crappy image quality!


      I like this setup with two different brightness. The dimmer switch won't work. It has to be at maximum dimming setting.

        Does yours blink also when you adjust the dimmers?

        I'm having this problem when I park the car in the sun for a long period of time the boost gauge will completely stop working but then after it cools down e.g. Left over night, next time I turn my car on it works fine, not sure what it could be. Any ideas?

          Yes it does. But only when the dimmer is reaching the lowest setting. Probably when dimming, the current is too high for the gauge. Its stated max 2 mA on the manual. I dont think there is a dimmer or variable current to control the dimming in the gauge though. Its just 2 settings, medium and max brightness.

          Hmm... on the operating manual its says that the operating temperature is -20 to +60 degrees C. Unless your car temperature is above 60 degrees C, which i doubt it would reach that high. But then and again, you're up in brissie right. So it can get super hot in the car. Trying sticking a thermometer in the car to see how hot it goes and compare that to when it works or not.

          I'm down in Melb so its pretty cool here. But its a sunny and hot day today, and my car is parked outside. I doubt it'll reach 60 degree C in the cabin.
