  • Upgrade radio query

G'day folks, I am contemplating upgrading my standard radio on my MkV to a JVC double din JVC KW-XR816.
I am not really interested in a sat nav unit as I have a good portable unit.

Can anyone see problems fitting this unit to my car please?

    cheers
    Dave

    Hey Dave

I only have OEM stuff but from what I have seen/read I think you will need a CANBUS adapter/converter box so your steering wheels controls/MFD will work. I'm pretty sure Panansonic can sell you one.

Other than it should be ok.

Thanks Benough, not sure which way to go at this stage.
RCD 510 or another brand. The bluetooth is pretty exxy for the RCD 510.
I am aware that I will probably need to change the Canbus, and probably the ariel connection as well.
I have a JVC unit in my Landcruiser and reception and the USB are the ants pants for me.
      cheers

What year is your Golf Dave?

OEM will be just "nice" and it will always work. They can be had for about $350 on forums etc.

There is a firmware setup that will get around the power drain issue. Check it out on my-gti.com, the website of forum user Maverick.

Do you have the long "bee sting" aerial or the short stubby one?

You can get kits from Dension with Bluetooth in them. My Gateway Five has Bluetooth and MDI. Got it for $330 landed.

Otherwise a Parrot CK3000 kit is good as well, had one for years and it never missed a beat.

Aftermarket you shouldn't need to do any gateway upgrades, but you will need the CANbus adapter (from someone like Connects2 or PAC Audio) and the Fascia kit (to make it fit the OEM dash) so add $100 easy for that.
The RCD510 is a nice option - SD card and 6 Disc MP3. I needed to upgrade the gateway in my MY07 GTi, but that was easy enough a job. I'm not familiar with any firmware changes that can be made to the RCD510 (only the RNS510) to stop the power drain issue.
I've just ordered a bluetooth kit (9w7) for it to hopefully add A2DP streaming, all up will have cost me about $800 (RCD510, gateway, 9w7, coding).

Thanks for the info Benough. My Golf is 2006 MY07.
I have the stock bee sting aerial. Out here where I live radio reception is patchy, so a good aerial is a big help.
I hadn't heard of the Denison Gateway Five, it sounds like it could be the go.
I don't really have a problem with the RCD 300 in the car, except it doesn't have USB.
The roads out here are pretty ordinary and CD's are a waste of time on unsealed roads because they skip too much. So all my music and podcasts are on a USB which I can play in my Landcruiser. I miss it in the Golf.
I also have Bluetooth in my Navigator, so the phone works with that, so Bluetooth isn't critical, but the Gateway Five has it, so that's a plus as well.
It seems a bit easier solution with the Gateway than going aftermarket for the HU and all the connectors and trim to match up.
              cheers

Thanks for the suggestions 99_FGT, but after Benoughs comments about Denison Gateway Five, I will look into that as another option.

Yeah, I had a read of that Jazd, as I said above, I will look into the Denison Gateway Five.
I don't have an iPhone, they don't work once I am 20kms out of town.
You need a blue tick phone out here and I don't think any smart phones are blue tick yet.
                  cheers

                    Hey Dave

If you're happy with your Nav Bluetooth then just get this.

Gateway 100 | iPod car adapter | iPod car stereo | iPhone car adapter

I had one for 3 years and it was great. Do you have a full or half height MFD? If you have full height you can control the iPod from the steering wheel. It's excellent.

Also considering the Gateway Five is designed for the touch screen RNS510 you won't utilise all of it's features, unless you get an RCD510.

                    Hope that helps

I have the half height MFD, but I am more interested in the USB than iPhone connectivity.
It looks like the gateway 300 might be the one then if the Five is overkill.
Thanks again for the info benough

                        Pleasure.

At least you can upgrade the 300 with a bluetooth adapter in the future if need be.
