  • Front Plate sizes?

What size front plates does everyone use, especially you guys from Canberra.

Just reading a post from Uomo from Victoria about the differences in Front plate sizes and was wondering if I should be getting a slimline front plate or if the standard size fits OK.

Standard one fits fine but get the slim line one it looks a heap tidier. Good luck with that..LVD

Are there mounting points on the front bumper, or does the dealer drill into the bumper when fitting the plates?

We've ordered slimlines but have to wait 6-8 weeks for them. In the interim the dealer will fit std plates - I don't particularly want 2 sets of hole drilled, or worse still an exposed set of holes from the larger std plates.

I have fitted a slimline plate to my Canberra car...... mounted directly onto the bold chrome front (tears were shed) but lowered it so that half the numberplate depth fell below the chrome and plate bottom ended up level with the top of the highest black horizontal grill bar. No problems with air flow and it looks better ... I think!. YW

I simply attached my front plate to the car with plastic ties for the several weeks it took to receive my slimline.

NSW Euro's. But my car has the mounting plate, so they were a must as I think the big plastic square hanging out of each side looks crap.

With yours, you will not have this as plates are now mounted directly to the grill trim....I personally would go with slim lines in black and use those funky ACT plastic plates, heat them slightly to match the curve of the car and then double side tape 'em on....wouldn't want to drill!!!

I've (now) got Euros on mine as well. The standard plates look crap on an R and on every GTI I've seen also.

Get them double sided taped on if it's on for a short period of time (front and back), as they drill straight into the rear bumper to fit those plates so you'll end up with a set of holes there too.

With the Euro plates I got some brushed chrome frames to match the grille, from Germany which are pre-bent at the front (and have a squillion holes in the back so you can use the existing holes) so next project is to remove the black plate mounting thingy and put the plate and frame directly on the bumper.

                  Hey Panman
How about a pic of the "brushed chrome frames"

Sorry Blur, you posted while I was typing.

R is going great (thanks for your help with the SB, it wasn't the problem but it was the "bolts in the wrong way round") TSB

Got a track day lined up for early October, once the wheels are on and the Haldex is installed and switch is wired, so will be able to give a seat of the pants report on this.

Next stage, probably Millteks, CAI (Gruppe M looking good or the APR one), and the DMS flash.

                          The Money Pit!

apologies to Bunty for hijacking your post!

Panman.....where'd you get those frames from??? And make sure you post your pics once you've cleaned up the front end!

Keep in touch re the rims and Haldex......keen to hear how the AWD controller goes. APR are using the BMC CDA CIA (spoke to Guy last week) on their install. Works damn well and has a nice subtle (but noticable) growl to it!

I put slimline front & back onto my GTI. Black background with silver lettering. In my opinion it looks OK. I wanted the plates to "disappear" as the front end looks so good and I didn't want to "wreck it" (my opinion) with a big white and green Qld plate drawing attention to itself. I've also (since the photo) put them both in slimline plate covers. My plates were (Carefully) screwed directly into the bumper. No big deal for mine. I don't plan on removing them anytime soon.
