Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Black chroming & smoothing....help

Guys and girls....as you would've probably guessed by now, I get bored quick and need to keep on doing stuff!

I want to black out the VW badging and the horizontel bars in the upper grill on the R32. How the hell do I do this? I know that painting chrome plastic will not work as the paint wont stick. Is there a product available to treat the badges to allow painting? Or is there a specific place to go to buy direct replacements?

I also want to smooth the doors and rear quarter panel by removing the bump strips. I have seen this done on Mk I's to Mk IV's (and on MkV's on dubmodder.com), but have never seen actual pic's of a MkV been done. Are the strips glued or double sided taped on? Or are they clipped on? If taped on, it should be easy. If clipped or glued it could be a real drama (not wanting to repaint a brand new car!!!)

Any help, direction or advice muchly appreciated. Thoughts on doing this?

for the grill and badging, why don't you see if there is a custom vinyl shop that can first do up the template, then then fit using a heat gun for molding. heat gun they use should not be be hot as to burn through. would be hellish but my mate Chad in newy used to do stuff like that to his
    motos all the time.

as for side strips, i have colour coded my last 2 cars and they were all those one way clip things. on my civic we tried to save as many of them as they were $8 ea. you may have a big session of bog coming up! not in a good way either!

Matt, the black badges you can buy from TMTuning.com

For the grill inserts most people get them resprayed and there are a few MKIV R's that have done this mod. As for the door rub strips I've seen a how to in the MKIV R32 forum on Vortex as well just do a search but I think they are fastened on with an adhesive. Best to get a body shop to do the body work but the badges are a DIY job.

I've used cast vinyl to black out the front VW badge. Another dude used the same vinyl to black out the chrome strip in the grill...

The front was done by removing the badge and then stretching the vinyl over the badge. Tip: Use Cast vinyl film as calendared vinyl will not stretch.

        Some more info here:
Can anyone tell me if there are any companies selling products to make the front of the R32 a little less Jetta and a bit more aggressive? Or have any of you got pics? Thanks

Came home from work a bit early today, had a few drinks and an idea popped up. Mask the front VW badge with matt-black vinyl. I pulled the front grill apart and removed the badge, masked it with vinyl and voila! What you think? I like  The whole process took about 30 mins. Now the bad...
