  • bad sound after long run

Hi all diesel fanatics and auto techs,

This question probably should be in the diesel forum but hear goes.

I'm looking for some assistance diagnosing a horrible metallic like 'choofing' sound after long periods on open road with cruise control.

    Jetta TDi MY 2007 manual.

On long trips mostly interstate and after being on cruise control for a couple of hours set at approx 100kmh or 1850 rpm in 6th and touching the brakes or down changing to disengage the cruise control, this awful noise emanates from the engine. No performance loss when throttling and noise disappears. Returns on a trailing throttle again until either a hard blip on the throttle in a lower gear or corrects itself at idle for a few moments.

This noise does not present itself around town with variable throttle.

fuel economy on these long trips is around 5.0 L per 100km and around town 5.8 to 6.4 L per 100km depending on suburban traffic.

The Jetta has just clocked over 137,000km after a 3,500 round trip interstate.

Is this noise associated with the turbo? Is it a major or minor problem? Or a known issue?

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in anticipation of replies.

Ask the mods to move this to the Diesel section, you may get some responses there.
