How true is it about the three and a half months waiting list when you want to order a new GTI?
Are there GTI's laying about and this is just a scheme to get you (me) in?
It is not necessarily a waiting list - More like the time to build and ship a car out to AUS. The dealer can look around for one that is already in AUS or on the boat for you that hasn't been ordered for anyone.
by the time i get my car it will have been almost 4 months.
BUT
It depends on spec. when i ordered my car there were plenty to choose from that were already built and on their way over. So delivery could have been within a couple weeks. But i knew the spec i wanted and was willing to wait for it.
So i ordered on 22nd of may. My car was actually built at the end of july. Just landed in melbourne on the 11th. Should be in my driveway within a couple weeks

Hey Tim - our GTIs were on the same boat!! 8-)
We ordered ours 31 May, so the "waiting list" depends on when the next boat arrives, unless VW Aus have on in stock.
Yes its true, very true. VW have to build the car to your order. Sometimes you might be lucky and there will be one in stock at another dealer. Most dealers hide their stock on our vehilce search (nadcom). Its sucks when we try to find cars for customers and are unable to find one, then the customer rings up and finds one at another dealer. So frustrating!!!

I did that. I told my dealer were it was and they were able to get it for me. Helped with a bit of a discount as they said thanks for staying with us.
It is a ploy by the importers,(not the dealers) to 'make cars hard to get'. It keeps the value of the cars up. Especially low volume performance models. After working in the automotive business for 40 years Ive seen this tactic in many franchises. Bazz

True, but when theres only a certain amount of cars allocated and demand outstrips supply delays must be expected.
VW Golf R32 MkV Mini Cooper S
R32 is here and sounds awesome, loving the throttle blips on the down changes.
Just received my GTI after nearly a 3 month wait.
Could have had one straight away at another dealer that had the specs I wanted but I didn't like their attitude and thought the other dealer might have been able to source it from them. They wouldn't let it go though. Was happy to wait, gave me a bit more time to sell my car privately.
