  • My new Mk5 Sportline

    Hi folks,

I've just made the move to modern cars and bought myself a 2005 2.0 FSI Sportline. It's a world away from my Mk1 and I'm still getting used to it, but enjoying the hell out of it too. Only 50K km.

Bought from a dealer so I got a 4 year warranty equivalent to a manufacturer's warranty so to avoid too many cost repair bills should things go wrong.

Thanks! I'm enjoying it - can't really believe I finally have a 'grown up person's car'

Can't wait to put it through it's paces and driving it with a bit more confidence

I'd thought about getting Euro-style plates, but at $150 a year I don't think it's worth it. Considering some other special plates though.

And maybe later on some fancier rims and tyres. But we'll see.

      Cheers

Very nice find Greasy. 16" wheels too, which look OK.

May have to change your user name to greaselesskitchen??

Enjoy it mate, they are a very good car.

Yeah, it's looking a bit forlorn and forsaken. I plan to give it a spin this weekend to blow away some of the cobwebs and get a bit of that raw driving experience.

Nice as well! Golfs always look great in black. Yours looks like it's got aftermarket rims on it? I'm yet to work out how to operate the driving lights (or lots of other features) - need to spend some quality time with the manual.

Oh another post I missed before I replied!

Thanks Maris. The stock alloys might get upgraded up some point but they look nice for now (albeit with a smal bit of gutter rash). They are great cars - I can't quite believe I own this one, especially after years in the Mk1. The folks at work are impressed and after all is that all that really matters? Actually my former boss has an FSI and he loves it so much he bought another one.

'Greasykitchen' stays for now - it kind of reflects my usual messiness

They're genuine VW 17" Denvers from a 2008 mk5 GTI, I scored the rims on ebay for $315.00 Couldn't believe my luck. I'm still waiting on centre caps and wheel nut caps.

I wanted the factory look, I've always thought the mk5 GTI styling was perfect, one day I'll own a REAL GTI lol.

When I was shopping for my mk5 I was only looking at Sportline's, I wanted the fog lights, sports seats (sportier than the Comfortline or Trendline) and the slightly lower suspension of the Sportline.

Just adding the 17" wheels has made the car look even lower, a mate put 17's on his Comfortline and wow what a difference it made to the look of his car, it made a fairly placid can look tough.

Same here, although I found out later that the comfortline 'pacific' models (the run out model) have most of that gear also.

I thought they might be GTI but I wasn't sure. Good score though, even without all the caps.

I agree that the GTI looks awesome - good combination of mild and wild, I guess. The honeycomb grill and the rims make them stand out but they don't look too gaudy.

17"s might be something to look at in the future then. I test drove a Trendline prior to getting this one, it was plain, esp the stock rims. A little blah really.

I wasn't particuarly looking for a Sportline, but I just got lucky with this one. I had wondered what feature the 'Pacific' ones that came out later had. I saw a couple of Pacific autos (and out of my budget) and they looked nicely decked out.

Also, possibly a silly question, what does FSI actually stand for? I think I saw it once but I've forgotten.

                            Cheers
