Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • R32 Clutch & Flywheel

    Hi All,

Just a quick one....as the lovely car is going in for a complete timing chain and associated parts transplant, I thought I would take this opportunity (@ 65,000) to replace the clutch and flywheel.

I have heard a number of things, but mainly that I should stick with a DMF unless I want to get some more rattles and vibrations, and that the stock clutch is good enough.

So my questions are for a Mk5 R32 what are peoples thoughts on a single mass flywheel and performance clutch or should I stick to standard on both?

I have been advised by one after my questions that an OEM DMF and a Southbend Stage 2 Daily clutch would be good, but then also saw:

Clutch Kit: SACHS Performance Clutch Kit + Performance One Mass Flywheel - S-Performance GmbH

I will be mainly doing everyday driving with the occasional track day.

In the near future I am definitely getting an ECU remap, catback exhaust and intake, and considering performance cams and haldex gen2 over the next 12 months.

Any help on this or other clutch/flywheel options is much appreciated.

    Thanks

Said it before and i'll say it again - Ring ASV Spares in Brookvale - They are significantly cheaper than other suppliers and they have the OEM parts - I don't know if they can get the performance stuff, but ask! If you do ring them, post the prices, i'm interested to know how much they want for them

I asked this same question for my TDI. I spoke to Gavin from Custom Code. He's on here all the time but his user name escapes me.

He told me that it will make no difference to NVH for me so you should be fine.

Maybe try and get a lightened one for a bit easier revs?

That's my opinion that they don't make any extra noise. Australians may have more sensitive hearing than me though! My A3 with Solid flywheel made no extra noise as far as I was concerned.

Sounds fair...so in that case if I were to go lightened SMFW and clutch kit...nothing too intense....as mainly a daily drive....do people have an preferences? in price and quality?

EDIT: just got off the phone to ASV and complete clutch kit and Flywheel OEM - drum roll please.... $950

That is insanely cheap, most other places weer quoting that just for the flywheel!

Thanks for the head's up.....still keen to hear of performance options though?!

            Same post as VWG....

NA power wouldn't necessitate the higher clamping forces but aggressive driving does.
The OEM setup would probably be fine (I have a ceramic + SMF in my Mk4 R32 at the moment and its awesome but am having problems with it). Other companies such as Clutchmasters FX series kits, the Sachs one mentioned and Southbend are good options too.

I have a bit of flywheel chatter at idle, but really, if you are doing performance things like exhaust cams and engine mounts it shouldn't bother you.

If your in the kill 2 birds with one stone frame of mind already, get some headers and high flow cats put on while the box and everything is out. Quotes around here were 1k for fitting on top of the exhuast so its an exxy exercise as well.

Here's what my SMFW sounds like...

              Hey dubbers.

I just recently bought a R32 Under heavy acceleration ( launching of the line ) the car feels like it's slipping in 1st and 2nd gear. It also produces a very heavy clutch smell. I never had this problem with my GTI with the same driving style.

As the car is 4wd do i need to have a different approach to the car when launching ( i don't consider myself to be a clutch rider at all) and also how long does under normal usage on average a clutch last for in a R32.

I feel like i could be up for some $$$$ :|

Car is a 06 build and has 90k on the clock.

              Cheers
