dsg upshift delay

Hi, am a newb with 07 GTI 5door DSG. Very excited!

Have driven the car in manual mode all day today and have found that there is a delay in upshifting from when i flick the paddle. The dash display of gears changes up but there is this delay of 0.5 seconds or so before the gear is changed. Hence the car ends up being revved for that much longer. Just wondering if this is normal for DSG. I sorta expected much more instant, playstation like response, for upshifts anyway.

Congrats on your new car. In terms of DSG the response isn't instant but is pretty close. Perhaps try lifting on the throttle a little on the upchanges and see if the response is a little quicker. You have to remember the electronics are trying to do just that and make the conditions just right to shift.

as itgwv stated - the nominal dsg response is near instant. wikipedia has the answers! haha

as for lifting off when changing up, i generally maintain throttle or accelerate through the change. i am honestly not sure if this is correct... but it works for me. i have clocked 25,000km in nearly 2 years with no trouble.

i would suggest that it may be a good move to either get access to VAG-Com and see what is going on (check for DTCs), or take it back to the dealership for a once over. hope this helps.

i get that with mine too, always hit redline when trying to shift at 4000revs (no power after 4000 in the tdi) because of the delay. might get mine checked out too

Ive got over 80,000 kms on my DSG box...it gets a bit clunky after all that....still feels a million times better than an new normal Auto box even after that many Kms.

Will be taking the car back to the dealership today afternoon for electronic diagnosis. Strange thing is that i have not really noticed this delay with other DSG cars that i test drove which included another gti, gt and tdi. Maybe i wasn't paying that much attention...

Downshift is quicker than i expected (as the engine needs to blip and then gear engages) but delay in upshifting is throwing off the driving. Especially when going around the corner coz it will "hold" the gear even though it's been upshifted. Makes for much rougher driving with unintentional revving.

Will see if the diagnostic finds anything. Probably not by the tone of the service dude...

i've just turned over 18000km on my dsg box..

and what i've noticed is it delays a little like that when driving along gently..

when flogging the guts out of it, it shifts pretty much straight away...

Are you on the "A" pedal when up shifting ?
The DSG makes an educated guess on which way you are going to shift. There are lots of factors at play but my basic view on it is if you are accelerating then the DSG thinks you will need to go up a gear and preselects the next higher gear and changes up straight away. If you off the accelerator or on the brake the DSG thinks that you are slowing down and pre selects the next lower gear. If you shift the opposite way to what it has guessed then it will take a little longer to engage the gear you have selected.

Sam, my advise would be, following after the comments of Subie25L, drive it like you stole it for a while, before you take it back to be checked.

Might not change anything, but it would be fun.

just been to the dealership. Had a diagnostic check and apparently everything is ok according to the computer... the guy said that he reset the transmission programme. But it still seems to have that delay tho.

what i don't get is, if the computer is trying to guess the next gear, why is there a delay between the 1st and 2nd gear? i mean it's not like it's got another choice! There seems to be the most delay in upshifting from 1st to 2nd.

On motorways it seems to change ok. well it's not that noticeable because the revs are not that high.

Anyway, was told to drive a bit more for another week and if there still seems to be problem then to book it in for a more thorough check.

I dont mind if this really is how DSG shifts. What i do mind is if my car is the only DSG which has this delay! >.<

Just to check, does it happen to you when the car is first started or even after the engine has had time to warmup? I know that it is more obvious when the engine is cold, and it gets better after it has warmed up. also when accelerating hard it's less obvious for me...

Mine use to be shocking when the car was cold for jolting if i used manual. Also had a boost cut around 4k until warm so as not to destroy the gearbox. Was running 200kw and 380Nm though.

I've noticed the same on mine from 1st to 2nd but my theory is that I am being to soft on paddle shift and it isn't registering. After hitting the redline the DSG auto upchanges to protect the engine.

I'm pretty sure that this what's happening on mine.... Your's maybe different.
Since I've became aware of it, I make sure that I give it a good tap and it seems to work. Other than that, just stick it in S and drive it hard.

I have a similar problem only when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear, there's a slight delay. Otherwise the gear changes are swift. I have tried varying my driving style to see if it is something i'm doing.

I figured that the gearbox wants you the engine to be at a higher rev before changing, therefore it won't allow you to change (hence the delay). Its just a matter of getting used to it. So now i change from 1st to 2nd at around 2200 revs.
