Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • What is this part called ... Shifter Surround?

I've been looking all over the web but no luck, perhaps it's that I'm searching with the wrong description?

I need to know what this part is called.

    Cheers in advance,
    Alan.

Sometimes they are just called a trim and another term for it might be escutcheon I think.

This part is proving bloody elusive, I'll keep scouring eBay I suppose.

I assume you you mean the chrome piece.
I fixed one once on another car by peeling the chrome off and repainting satin black.
                  Came up good

VW Gold Coast quoted $130.00 ex Germany, somebody is making some serious profit me thinks.

                      Thanks for the input lads.

hey mate, is that only the chrome piece they are charging that much? i have a gti dsg which the previous owner has ruined the gear stick
and marked it ... common problem with the rubberised plastic crap they coat it in.

this is where ford and holden at least do a good job where by their window controls and so forth dont peel...

ive had a bmw that done the same thing and now this vw....

                          G'day mate,

Yeah they're charging that much, I hate feeling like I'm being ripped off.

I know what you mean about the crappy black paint too, my window, headlight and CD player switches and buttons are all showing poor wear.

All the mk5's I've seen have varying amounts of the same wear.

sorry to revive an old dead thread, but the chrome on my shifter is also bubbling up, anyone have a cheap fix to this? (ie; a carbon fibre wrap replacement etc.)
