Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • MkV had its day?

On the Golf GTI page on Wikipedia....

there is a paragraph about the MkV...

"The Golf 5 has proven expensive to build - largely due to its uncommonly long 50-hour build time. According to multiple reports in the European press, its replacement is thus likely to be rolled out in 2008, a good two years earlier than originally scheduled. This means that the production run of the U.S. version of the Mark 5, introduced only in 2006 two years after its world debut - is likely to have an uncommonly short production run."

This is wrong in the fact that it was released before 2006 but I have heard before that the MkV is expensive to build, will the MkV really be replaced in 2008-2009? Anyone have any more information on this? Confirmed or not...

Edit...I assume by 2006 they mean the US market.

wow, didn't know about the 50 hour built time... that's heaps for a mass produced car isn't it? although the end product is very nice

and according to a bit earlier where they mentioned that VW build quality has gone down due to marketing and pricing vs Audi.. shame on them (the marketing department)... why intentionally go out of ur way to reduce build quality? If it's true of course, can't trust everything u read on the net.

*sigh* I haven't spent too long in an Audi before so I can't really say, but I must say.. if I'm pretty pleased with the current build quality of the dubs.. imagine what it would've been if the marketing peopple didn't have say.

Didn't know of the 50 hr time, heard it was more like 36 and they are dropping it to around 19 with the MK6 which is coming out later next year. Apparently car will look pretty similiar with only some slight changes like frontal area, rear with the brake lights and an extra crease down the sides.

R32 is here and sounds awesome, loving the throttle blips on the down changes.

The hour figure may be up for debate, but the rest of the info has been pretty widely reported for some time now. There was even talk for a while that Golfs would never be built in Wolfsburg again. But, that seems to have done a complete reversal as I believe the Mk6 will be made solely in Wolfsburg, or at least, that will be the case for ALL Australian bound models, not just R32s and 3dr GTIs as is currently the case.

The other reason cited by net articles for bringing forward the Mk VI is to update the interior and the dash, in which most competitors had modernised faster than the golf (the Civic being the most extreme example).

If you've been looking at the articles and 'spy photos' of the Mk VI that have been bouncing arround for weeks, there is very little update done to the outside (except the lights), with the basic shape remaining identical, and most articles have commented that engines remain the same (except the addition of more TSI).

The info is definately true... I've seen the pics of the MKVI they are planning to release. Basically, the GM of Volkswagen thinks that the MKV Golf is too expensive and takes too long to to build so they are releasing a new model that is cheap and quick to make...

Way I figure it, those who got the MKV are in a great position because:
                    (1) The MKV Golf will be rare in comparison to other models, and
                    (2) The MKV Golf is of a better build quality...

Both of these indicate... BETTER RE-SALE VALUE!!

Funny I should stumble across this. About 12 months ago I read somewhere that it took about half the time to build a Toyota Corolla v the MKV Golf ....hence half the car I suppose. I'd certainly rather pay the price.

My guess is they will do away with the replacable door skins. I have read somewhere recently about a simpler/cheaper rear suspension.

Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.
