  • New member introduction and GT Sport question

    Evening all,

I've heard good things about this forum for some time, and am at the stage where I'm contemplating an upgrade to my 2008 Golf GT Sport, so I thought I'd drop in, introduce myself, and get some valuable info from the guru's here.

My Sport is a 1.4l manual, with just over 50k on the clock, but it's almost out of warranty, and I've been contemplating either trading for a nice R32 with low K's OR doing a few additions to my Sport.

Firstly, I love my car. It's great fun to drive and is in excellent condition. If anything I've always regretted not going to the 2.0l. Ultimately I went for the 1.4l for economy, but at times the lack of torque and overall power has me regretting the decision. So, I was wondering if it would be viable doing a few simple mods to my 1.4, or whether or not it would't be worth it. Essentially, how strong and upgradable are the 1.4l twin charged engines?

I was considering a mild chip increase, exhaust upgrade and minor turbo boost, but I guess I wasn't sure about the gearbox and remaining engine being able to handle much in the way of upgrades? I realise I'm not going to have an R32 or GTI at the end of it, but it may be enough to satisfy what's been lacking and save me the $ by way of upgrading.

Anyways, apologies for the long post, and hopefully someone may have some guidance for me.

Nice to meet you all, and great forum folks.

    Dave

Any minute now the 1.4 crew will chime in mate, PM GT Tom, Paul OH and Barneyboy who, amongst others are or were the 1.4 GT champions on here. Heck, you might even get some ideas from Polarbear - without a doubt the craziest of the bunch, but I think he's a Ferrari driving laywer nowdays...

      Cheers Greg

I did find a post by Polarbear actually. Something about doing some work to the air box. Alas I'm not that mechanically savvy, so really don't see myself doing any of the mods. I guess I was just after some advice about what I can get away with having done.

Thanks Greg. Perhaps I'll PM a couple of the guys and see what happens.

You will find that even with a tune, the gains will not be much. I've been in an APR tuned 1.4TSI GT and the improvements were marginal (perhaps more midrange). The stock 1.4 TSI is probably already at it's limits in terms of wringing more power and torque out of it.

However, the transmission (DSG or Manual) should be able to take any power upgrades you wish to do as it is the same as the one in the GTI.

Having said that, I was able to hustle a Civic Type R up a long hill (I was basically on his tail) and then keep on it when he tried to lose me on the straight (much to his surprise).

        My GT is stock.

Interesting that you went for the 1.4 for economy reasons considering the combined fuel consumption rating of the 2L is 6.6l/100kms versus the 7.7/100kms for the 1.4. Might not be too late to upgrade to the 2.0L, seen a few of them for sale lately. Have yet to hear anyone complain about the torque from this beast.

I read that as being in reference to the 2L engine of the GTi...

Maybe but my point still stands - if you want economy you should go the 2L diesel.

                Hmmm

I also enjoy changing gears, hence my aversion of the diesel.

You do realise they come in a manual too?

Did we say something wrong? You're a little sensitive don't you think?

I upgraded from a Mk5 1.4 GT to a Mk6 GTI about 2 months ago and haven't regretted it, although I do miss the GT. I was considering some slight mods to the GT, but it was out of warranty and the lease was finishing. I took a good EOFY offer and went for the GTI. It is definately more refined AND powerful, and I find the economy after 5,500km to be much the same - around 9 L/100km in my inner city driving, and 7 on freeway/trips. No right or wrong option, but if you are after more power definately go for the R32 or GTI. But the GT is a great car, I would have got another one if they still sold them
