Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • GT Sport DSG Missing Intake Cover?

Hey guys, I am currently looking at an 08 Golf 2L Turbo Diesel, everything about the car is immaculate but I noticed it was missing something in the engine bay, can someone tell me what it is called exactly, and what I should do about it before the purchase? Also if there is anything else I should look out for in these cars?

PIC: this is just another engine bay photo I found, its missing that rectangular cover over the intake at the front.

    Thanks again guys

    Hey Mate, Welcome!

Great choice of car there. Don't stress, head on down to your local VW parts with that picture (and a VIN if possible) and they will sort this out. Probably a $15 part...

Don't loose the sale over it.

Let us know when you get the car!!!

What he said, I'd definitely still buy a GT TDI after owning my TSI!

Ask the dealer to sort it out for you but don't lose the sale over something so cheap.

Had the same part fall off my GTI and say hi to the thermo fan a few months ago, hasn't made any difference to the performance. It's on the warranty to do list.

Thanks for the great info, and for being so helpful guys!
I will bring this up with the dealer tomorrow hopefully, pretty much in love with this car.

Is there anything else I should look out for with this model?

Potential injector problems, see thread in diesel forum.

The same cover was missing off mine when I bought it, its cheap to replace from dealer.
Funnily enough I found the old one months later trapped in the front bar when I took it off. It wasnt even broken.

Maybe you'll get lucky since you're looking at an 08 GT. Apparently post April 2008 models have the revised injectors which AFAIK have not failed so far. I was lucky enough to have an August 08 build, I had zero mechanical clue at the time of purchse.

You should also take DPF into consideration. If you normally take short drives it can be prone to causing problems. Plenty of information in the Diesel section.

Depends on the build date, which is usually several months beforehand. My car is an 02/08 yet it was built Sept 07, so it's in the "bad" batch....so I just hold my breath and hope!

thanks, i'll make sure to check that out!!
what about DSG, is it reliable? the car was cold when i drove it, and my friend said it was a bit clunky, but i think i just wasnt used to the turbo and i was letting go before it got to change gear (thus high revs).

Also, sorry to double post, but could someone PM me with a reasonable price for an 08 model of these? I am scared i might be getting ripped.

If you look on Carsales they are listed at an average of about $28k, lowest is about $26k.

thanks jazd, i assumed they were good prices, going in the next few days to go through it all with the dealer!!

28k for the TDI or 32k for a new TSI is also a hard choice

thanks guys. so helpful here guess ill be living here soon!

32k for a brand new 118TSI? Doubt it especially with the DSG. I was under the impression that they were just under 35k drive away. I think the 90TSI you could definitely get for under 32k but that's not even comparable to a GT TDi. I'm probably a bit biased but I don't even think you can compare the 118TSi to the GT. Closest comparison would be the GTD but thats a 46K car.
