Brake Squel

Hey guys,

My brakes are starting to squel when cold but after it warms up the noise is gone anyone have this problem? It's driving me crazy the car has only done 20,000+km so the pads should be still quite new and also i'm not a racing car driver so the brakes should only have medium wear....I don't like to brake hard as I know it causes alot of unneccesary wear and tear on the parts....

Wonder if it's something wrong with my pads or something that can be easily fix or maybe it's even normal.....

Take it back to your dealer. They should fix it for you w/o charge.

HI Sorzai,

I have a mark v 2.0tdi and was warned when I first got it not to use the high presure hoses on the wheels like the ones you get at the do it yourself car washes, I did not ask why, but i was told that using them can cause the breakes to start squeling, and then they need to be pulled apart to fix it. Not sure if its true or not but needless to say I am avoiding using these hoses on my wheels, wont help fix the problem but might help it happening again??

try blasting all the brake dust off the calipers / rotors / baking plates with a high pressure water blast.

Also try a couple of hard stops from 100km incase the pads are glazed

Brake squeal at 20k km is not usually a warrantable item.

Sometimes metal filled brake pads can develop a thin film of rust on them overnight if conditions are right. The furst application can be noisy and a touch harsh until this film is removed.

Noise can also be other things so best get it checked out.

Arrggh.....i always wash my rims with a pressure hose... hope thats not what is causing it...however it's not too bad at least it's not always happening like everytime i press the brake. It only happens when it's cold and often after a night or rain and when the rotors are wet.


I'll get the VW mechanic to check when I next go in for service

How often do you wash your car (rims)? We don't have any noise from our Golf5 and I always wash the rims and the inside of the rims trying to get the dust out, but I do it approx. once a month.

So, I think that your noise could be related to washing the rims and driving next day morning. Try to drive the car after washing the rims to get rid of the moisture from the brake pads before you park for night.

well since it's been raining in perth alot lately i haven't washed my car or rims for a LONG time so i don't think this is an issue, or maybe my rims are getting wet from the rain splash whilst the car is park....
