Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Jetta won't start after stereo replacement

Decided I needed to have iPod support so bought a 3rd party (chinese) system from Sydney. The harness did not seat correctly and after many emails they convinced me it was all OK. After three days the car wouldn't start. The joy of can bus and the stereo going through. Has anyone had the same type of issue with this. The annoying part was the iPod functionality was rubbish and now I have had to hire a car for the next week which has iPod functionality - although it is still pretty poor. Any suggestions would be helpful.

    Cheers,
    Brad

Was it powered on to some degree all the time so that the battery drained? That's not unknown with replacement stereos on CANBUS vehicles.

Still have battery but the car would not kick over. Tried today and the wipers came on.

Cranking the engine takes a lot more current than wipers/lights. Can you try jump starting it?

The wipers started without being on! Have someone looking at it on Tuesday but wanted to see if anyone else has any issues. I have removed the new stereo and installed the original.

                1) Rip the Chinese POS out and throw it into the lake.
                2) Install the OEM hea dunit.
                3) Charge the battery.
                4) Buy a VW head unit like the RCD 510, RNS 510 and depending on the year perform a CAN Bus gateway upgrade.

I got caught by this: the lights need about 12V to work, the wipers possibly a little bit more. The starter needs typically over 13V to work, depending on how cold the engine is (ie 5 or 25 degrees outside). Modern cars don't do anything (other than the starter relay clicking) when the battery is flat - if you are an RACQ member get them out to see if it is your battery - you have done the right thing by pulling the dud stereo out before it kills your battery. Otherwise try jump starting it.
Common consensus is that it is the Gateway that is the problem - even with the third party stereo they can still suffer the same problem.
                  Edit:
