  • Multi-function display settings

    Hey guys,

First post on the board, hope you can help me out. I bought a 2004 VW Golf Comfortline little 1.6L special a couple of months ago. Kinda regretting the engine size thing, but otherwise the car is awesome.

My question relates to the multi-function display. I was reading the manual that came with the car and it explains that I can get into a bunch of cool settings by holding down the little rocker switch for a few seconds, pressing the reset button and clicking my heels twice. But I can't seem to get it to work. The sweet functions in question include the mirror's that angle down in reverse, and having the windows roll up by themselves when I lock the car. For some reason though I just can't get it to work. Any luck with this one? Does the car have to be on/off? Do I have to be on some Information item before I can move to the menu?

    Hoping you guys can help.

    Cheers
    Jimmy

I believe these options are available with the sat nav unit or with the new 08 models coming out.

You need VAG-COM to change your settings, or your local VW dealer can do it for you with their scan tool if the scenario is as Ozgriff mentioned (i.e. you have no factory SatNav?).

if he has a multi function display, he must have satnav because you cant get the mfd without satnav here can you? and i think you can adjust things like that if you have the mfd if im not mistaken. anyhow if you cant figure it out, just get your dealer to do it they should do it for free

edit: welcome to the forum btw its one of the best

Nah, there's either the ½ size one (which I'd say he'd have) with the remaining top space used for warning lights like low fuel and so forth, and the full size one which is with factory satnav. I think you'll find that dealers won't do it for free... they have too many overheads and are always labour -> money hungry!

            same problem- 1.9 TDi comfortline

            hi guys

just got my car yesterday (woot!) and have been trying to fiddle with the trip computer to get into the settings so that i can change some convenience options like- i'd like to be able to press once and get the drivers' side unlocked only... little things like that.

i can't seem to get into the settings though, even with reference to the manual as the manual talks about a "PLUS" display and i just have the 'trip computer' as someone said... mine fills up half of the display only.

            question.
does this mean that i don't have those convenience settings? or does this mean i need vagcom (or some variation of it)?

            thanks!

cant get to hte convenience settings with the half height display. need the full sized mfd unfortunately so yep you'll need either a vag-com or a dealer.

oh okay... so you mean i DO have those functions, i just can't get to it myself. i just need to get a vagcom?

there's a group buy for v-checker, do you think that will do it?

Yes, it will do it, but you'll need to research exactly which byte to change, and what it needs to be changed to. Vagcom is more a case of ticking the appropriate box. I've got Vagcom, PM me if you're interested in DIY rather than getting the dealer to do it.

now i don't have to wait for 15,000 before i send it in to a dealer for changing options

Only some cars have the mirror down in reverse function (AFIK you need satnav and/or memory seats or somesuch), so even with Vag-com or the dealer tool you might not be able to get this working. Windows down/up via remote is doable though (amongst a whole lot of other stuff like auto lock/unlock, double click locking/unlocking etc).

My advice is to go through all the options and make up a list so you can get all the changes done in one go.

The mirror dipping thing only works if you have factory reversing sensors installed. It still won't work if the reversing sensors have been added in by the dealer later. There is nothing you can do to make the windows roll up automatically when you lock the car. You can hold down the lock button to wind the windows up.

                          codes?

thanks guys- i'm so pleased that you guys say i can change the locking functions.. my dealer said that i don't have these options but i honestly don't think she knows much about the car. they're not a vw specialist.

anybody have codes for the locking functions?

                          i'm looking specifically for
                          1. single door unlocking when unlocking button is pressed once. then all doors unlock with 2 presses.
                          2. automatic locking of doors after 15 km/h
                          3. footlight brightness to be increased.

and i just found out (from the manual) that if i hold down unlock i can have the windows wind down automatically! COOOOLLLL!!

i feel like a kid with a new toy

As you have the half-height MFD you can't change the locking options yourself, but anyone with the VW dealer tool (or Vag-Com) can change them for you.

I don't know anything about adjusting footlight brightness, but if it is listed as an adjustable thing with the MFD then it should also be able to be changed .

If you purchased the car new from a VW dealer they should have asked you how you wanted these options set up. Assuming they didn't, I think it would be fair to ask them to set them to your preferences free of charge (it shouldn't take them very long at all, so long as they know what they are doing )

                              thanks gregozedobe!
mrx has a vagcom and knows the codes so i don't have to worry about a thing. yay!

my dealer is a 5 hour drive away... and i refuse to send the car there only to have it sent back! and the car came with some scratches by the scuff area, so they'll have to do something about that for me... but it might be in the form of accessories or something
