Can you describe what we're seeing in the picture? Is that oil sludge stuck onto melted cast iron?

As brad says, engine internals; completely cover by varnish and sludge, as the result of extended oil changes and also incorrect engine oil being used.

You can use any oil that is approved to VW standard "502.00" or "504.00" (check the back of the container).

504.00 spec (which supersedes 502.00 spec) is particularly recommended for FSI engines.

On the other hand, if your warranty has expired, then you can use any oil you want really.

Did you mean Castrol Edge Sport 5W-30? If so, I wouldn't say it's top of the range - the Castrol oil that's only available from the dealer (click for pics) would be of a higher quality. Or any 504.00 oil for that matter.

But yes, it should be fine, since 502.00 is deemed acceptable by VW.

That oil is more expensive or the same cost as 504.00 approved oil like Shell Helix UltraExtra or Penrite Enviro+ 5W30 oil, which sell for $84 and $74 when there is a special at Supercheap or Repco. Also there is LiquiMoly Toptec4200 for $80 from Autobarn.

I'm pretty sure you can buy 5L bottles of Castrol Longlife III from dealers for about $85. Once I get through my current bottle of Edge Sport I'll be getting me some of that!

I think it will cost you more than $85.

The whole Edge range is in a gold container.
                    There is no 0w-30.

                    Ege Sport 5w-30 is 502.00.
