  • 235/40/18 and ET45... Rubbing?

Guess this sort of question has been done a few times (no results on search...), but the difference in price between 225/40/18 and 235/40/18 has got me wondering...

I'm getting some 18x8.5, ET45's... Kumho KU31's seem to be OK in the 225/40/18 and apparently won't rub, but I carry a bit of a load in the boot and sometimes carry 4 people, so I don't really want the tyres to catch on the guards...

Would 235/40/18 be pushing it? I'm at standard GTI height (except in the rear - about 1-2cm lower)...

    Thanks,
    Aaron

    Hey Nuttr

    I'm running 235/40/18 on 18x7.5. I'm also quite low on V3's.

After tuning my settings it only scrubs on big bumps at speed and that said they are quite short. Also this can be sorted by slowing down.

235 isn't a deach sentence and at stock height you'll be fine.

Not sure why your car is up to 20mm lower at the rear. You going for the "reverse rake" look?

Slowing down is easy enough and i'm happy to screw mod the guards, etc...

Not purposely trying to go for the reverse rake look, but the car is a bit heavier than stock in the rear... And you can see it!

I'm on 18x8 ET45 w/235/40 and get very (very!) occasional rubbing when lightly loaded, mostly from not slowing down enough over large bumps. I very rarely have passengers in the back but suspect that it would be a bit nasty. In saying that, I'm only rubbing on the carpet guard liner where it has a 6-8mm lip on the inside of the rear guard, thinking of doing a little bit of surgery soon just in case.

Sounds like there is quite a few of us running 235s on 18 inchers. I have 235/40 on 18x8 ET45.

Like Paul said I rub when going over large bumps too fast when no one is in the car. It is the back that rubs for me. The fronts very rarely rub even before I did the fender screw mod. The very edge of the tires on the rear touch the guard or the inside of the guard, you can see the slight wear on the edge of the rear tires.

If you are going to be carrying loads or passengers then I would definitely not get 235s. I rub pretty bad with 4 people in the car.
