  • CANBUS Location in MK5 Jetta ?

    Hi all,

Hoping some Mk 5 experienced people can assist - i'm updating my CANbus module in my Jettta as i've experienced the battery drain issue since updating to a RCD-510 headunit.

My mechanic was to install my new module to fix this issue, however today was unable to locate the module.

It was not in the location under the dash indicated here; CAN bus gateway removing, installing and upgrading – Volkswagen Golf | my-gti.com

Nor was VW much help either (no surprise) - I take it the Jetta has a slightly different layout to the Golf?

Any assistance in locating this will hopefully save removing other parts of the dash unnecessarily.

    cheers, anthony

Its the Gateway not the Canbus mate, sorry. CAnbus is all through the car. It can be iin 2 places and for the novice will be easier with the module in your hand so you can pinpoint the correct multiplug ( single red) It can be upper right of relay panel and central electrics module under dash drivers side but have done a couple where they were under dash drivers side just left of the clutch pedal
    Cheers

Ah yes the gateway module is what i'm after Jmac.

Perhaps it varies for a DSG model? My mechanic advised he had the lower area of the dash off including relay panel and could not locate it...

        Hey i have fitted

Hey i have fitted alot of gateway ecu's in mk5 golf, jettas and the way i do it and people may not agree is to remove the wiper arms, then the plastic cover which is under the wiper arms, then remove the wiper motor. You will then see another cover on the rh side with two 10mm nuts remove the nuts and you will find the gateway ecu. This sound like a lot of work but it isnt at all i found this is a much better way then going from inside the car.p.s be careful when recoding the new unit.Cheers

Way too much work that mate, ive fitted plenty and isnt that hard. Is under dash drivers side , so if you have DSG obviosly no clutch so look at the relay plate, unclip it and move it out of the way and right at the back of the dash right it lies cant miss it red mulitplug like the one you will have in your hand. Ok as per above thread the care is to take a note of the original coding you have , make it easy and write it all down, and the biggie is to remember the variance code, go through the binary to the end and you will find variant, this is the only thing that will trip you , it will keep lights on the dash if it thinks its a left hand drive audi. Also your man will have to do a basic setting of the module too or it will store an incorrectly coded ecu fault
          Cheers

              Thanks Jmac.

So the red multi-plug connects to the module which i'm replacing? (See image below)

If my mechanic follows the directions for coding on the my-gti link in my first post there shouldn't be any issues from your experience?
Will pass on your instructions as well.

Mine was above the accelerator pedal, buried behind some relay panels. I had to pull out the headlight switch and trim panel, that little storage thing and go in from both below and the front to get the damn thing out.

                  Jmac,
Was considering replacing my radio/CD with an RCD510 unit that I can get from a VW dealership. Just wondering what you charge to update the canbus gateway to a later version to stop the battery drain issue. Don't mind if you PM me mate. I have been trying to call you on your mobile to discuss but there has been no answer. Obviously there is the issue of memorising what existing options are ticked in VAGCOM. Thanks mate.
