  • CL9 Accord Euro vs MK5 Jetta

I posted this in my old honda forum because i use to own an Accord Euro before my Jetta. (insurance payout after someone rear ended and wrote off my car)

Hence, it's only fair that i share the same comments in this forum.

    MK5 Jetta 2.0FSI 6spd vs CL9 Euro Lux 2.4L 6spd

    CONS
    - 2.0FSI engine not as smooth as CL9's 2.4l.
    - required to purchase a VAG as part of ownership to diagnose problems (for us enthusiasts)
    - timing belt needs changing whereas CL9 has timing chain
    - jetta sits a bit too high when stock, especially the rear.
    - engine sounded like a diesel for a little while, but VAG picked up issue and it was an easy $80 DIY fix (cam sensor replaced).
    - every time i switch climate control to re-circulate air, the aircond automatically swtiches on (standard, i don't like that)

    PROS
    - very solid built quality (not one creak or rattle.)
    - much more fuel efficient
    - better power delivery and slightly better handling / ride
    - no more radio ringing noise (as i had the pre-update CL9 which drove me crazy)
    - no lift off jerkiness when still in gear
    - very easy DIY service (super easy access to oil filter ie. at front facing right down)
    - a lot more standard features (ie. storage compartments under drivers and passengers seat, boot power output for travel fridge, auto wipers, auto headlights, auto dimming rear view mirror, climate control etc.)
    - with rear seats folded down i was able to fit an inner spring single mattress flat in boot that i needed to drive home.

Overall, both are very good cars in their own right.

Is your Jetta turbo? if its non turbo im surprised that you find it has better power delivery when the euro has a fair bit of extra power. Honda usually usually has pretty good standard features as well. My partner has the last generation Integra which has the ivtec 2.0 (same k series engine as the euro) and I do like driving it but the car does everything so correctly that i find it bland to drive, its a tad characterless. I assume a euro would be similar when compared to vw.

hey jessv3, i also had the DC5 integra 2.0 vtec before i owned the CL9 accord.
and i'd have to say of the 3, i still prefer the integra for pure enjoyment. although i did have coilovers and the handling and ride was absolutely magnificent. but agree the base integra can be a bit bland.

i now have a little girl, so no more 2 doors for me

my jetta is not turbo, but i feel the jetta is much lighter than the euro and 0-100 times are slightly quicker.
but that's just me. not much in it though.

Was yours the Type S? We have a 05 DC5 luxury 5spd auto, and its very comfortable and smooth. Over my Mkv GTI it has better standard equipment like bucket leather seats & sunroof, and servicing is so cheap on it. I think in the 2 yrs we've had it the total service bill is $600, the gti in 1 yr is closer to 2k :| Partly because the GTI has a timing belt and the Honda has a chain.

It might just be because the GTI has so much low down torque (333nm vs 190nm) That I find the Integra bland.

            Update.

After the VW Jetta and an Audi A6 4F, i am back to Hondas which i have owned all my life. (Integra DC2, Accord Vti, Integra DC5, Accord Euro CL9 Lux) Now I got a CU2 Accord Euro Navi Lux.
German cars just have too much character and soul (ie. problems..lol) and i dont have the time or patiences to repair and trouble shoot. I don't miss packing up my VAG that's for sure. It is a shame because i really wanted to try the other Germans brands and possibly exotic Italians (360 modena).

I love cars, but just want everything to work. ie. what some people would call boring
I am sure i will be back one day when i have more time on my hands when my 2 year old daughter grows up.

I have to say, that comparing my Euro to my Jetta,I have to agree with you.

The Jetta was 3 and a half years old,in 2 months time my Euro will be 3 years old,and the Euro has been completely free of irritations like rattles, squeeks, etc.

Good luck with the Euro,I think you are seriously going to love it,as its an awesome car.
