  • MK5 Jetta 2.0FSI sounding like a diesel - FIXED

I have had this problems for a few months now and finally figured a quick DIY fix.

I am sure many VW owners may have the same issue, so i thought i'd share what i've learnt.
Little things like this is what depreciates our cars, because to the unknowing, they see these as major issues and sell off.

Anyways, my car developed a diesel like sound a few months ago and didn't go away.
At first i thought it was the fuel i was using. Changed a few different outlets and diferent RONs over a few weeks, but no difference. I changed my spark plugs as part of my routine service, but no improvement. My car was also due for a new timing belt, so i got that done thinking that may be the cause, but no improvement. Ordered some coil packs but no improvement.

Finally after countless hours of googling i found it has something to do with the camshaft position sensor.
Ordered one, changed it last night and what an improvement. It was like having a new engine installed..lol

Very easy to switch over, one bolt holding down the sensor. the sensor itself was just under $80 from VW dealer.
Located towards the front left section of engine block. (you can easily see and access it from the top you won't miss it)

When you say sounds like a diesel, how do you mean?

    Good work!

Now that you mention it, mine does sound like a deisel when the engine is running. I'm also burning up alot of oil. I'll look into this and see if it resolves both issues. Thanks and good work

          Hmmm... sounds familiar.

Could the same apply to my MkV GTI?

It's sometimes reluctant to fire upon first start of a morning as well.

Has that been since the temperature has dropped?

I thought it was pretty standard for the 2.0tfsi & fsi engine to sound like a diesel at idle?

Direct injection on the FSI sounds quite diesel like at idle, but nowhere near the clattery MKV TDI level!

It was noticeably loud. Even with my windows all wound up i can hear the chugga chugga (like a diesel engine).
Starting the car was fine, temperature was fine and it drove okay. It was only when i was taking off that i really noticed it. It was very loud. Just didn't sound right. Most people who sat in my car thought it was the TDi model! LOL
Anyways, now fixed. so much smoother and when idling it's so much more quite. However, i do agree the 2.0fsi isn't the most quietest of engines, so there is still a bit of noise if you lift up the bonnet.

I have a VAGCOM and that pointed me sort of in the right direction, but didn't highlight the right part for replacement. it just sensed that the camshaft had slow response low rpm. i thought it was going to be a costly fix, but lucky it was just a dirty/faulty sensor.

I wouldn't stress as it'll more than likely be normal, had a heap of the same complaints but it's just due to this cold weather and nothing at fault.
