  • Windscreen chipped

Driving north on Sydney's M2 today, I was around the Pennant Hills exit when CRRRACK!!! I heard a sound on my windshield. A quick scan across my windshield confirmed a chip the size of a 5 cent coin right in the middle of the windshield.

There were no trucks about, none of those idiots dropping rocks from bridges, it was just a freak accident. (or was it bad karma for me since I responded harshly to a VW customer service call last friday. I was complaining of poor service from the dealership n

Anyway, so now my 4 month old Golf has a crack, so I just want to know if anyone's replaced/fixed a chip on their MK 5 windscreen. How much is this going to cost me and who's the best to see about this?

Had huge stone hit the windscreen of my mkv gti earlier in the year and about 10cent piece in size. Due to cars great structual strength didn't crack further over 2 weeks till replaced. Had it done at VW due to the rain sensing wipers and proper fit(apparently an issue on cheap copies) and cost me $600. really sorry to hear but one of those things and not a cheap fix.

R32 is here and sounds awesome, loving the throttle blips on the down changes.

      sorry to hear the news.
I too have a tiny chip from a day trip to hunter valley. As I know Obrien can fix them I have no idea how much tho. I think they some how weld the glass together again. they claim it's necessary to fix asap in commercial as going over speed humps may trigger to shatter the glass in cases..... I will update here once I know.

whatever you do, if you are going to replace it, make sure they use a NEW rubber windscreen surround.
on a previous car the obriens guy thought he would try and get away with reusing the old one.

it didn't leak, but you can tell from 5 metres away that it was dodgy.

i made him pull it all out and do it properly.

Most people think you should wait 3 months, 5000km before chipping a Golf...

Seriously though if you go to one of the major screen joints then you can get them to verify if it is in a safe place to repair, and if so, they will do it for you.

Do you have windscreen cover on the insurance policy?

I have windscreen coverage as part of my insurance (RACV). $50 per year and as many repairs/replacements as I need.

Had a chip repaired and wasn't happy with the result so they fitted a new genuine screen (I have rain sensors also).

Repairs cost anything from $30 to $50 depending on how bad they are do it's not a bad investment. I also priced a new screen at a dealer and it was $480 (rain sensing screen only).

Had a chip that went into a 5cm crack (sounds good doesn't it) on my Jetta (rain sensor etc) ...got it fixed at Novus with nil problems...$80. The rain sensing screens are also a lot cheaper there.

That would be because they are a non genuine screen though wouldn't it?

I've heard that the trick is to get it done fairly quickly though before the chip collects too much dirt.

                        Hang on.......
Can some please explain to me what is happening with rain sensor after you had new windscreen fitted?
Do you need to buy new sensor or old one is glued back, because it is part of your rear view mirror?

                        Thank you

It all sticks back on to the windscreen.

I got 2 stone hits in the first week of owning my GTI and since then have had 6 or 7 others, cost about 90 bucks a pop to get drilled and filled. none of them ever cracked and that was over 2 years ago since the first one.

                              all fixed!

                              Hi all,

The chip was fixed on Tuesday (O'Briens came over to my place and did the job in about 30 minutes). The guy was friendly and on-time and explained what he was doing concisely like the Service Rep i spoke to.

There is a lifetime warranty on the repair so I am happy about that, but what also impressed me was that the Customer Service guy was very friendly, helpful knew his product and was on-shore (thank goodness!)

I am fairly pleased with the fix, however the initial chip is still visible and a couple of lines (maybe a scratch/crack from the initial impact).

Cost was about 90 bucks and to be honest I am pleased with the Windscreen O'Briens at Seven Hills...good job fellas! I wish some VW Service Centres were this knowledgable about their products and this helpful!
