  • Normal for a petrol to blow some smoke under acceleration?

    Hi,

The other night as I was merging on to the freeway and a motorbike was sitting right on my tail I accelerated quite hard to merge onto the freeway and noticed in my rear view mirror what appeared to be smoke through the motorbikes headlights? My car is a 06 GTI, I have never noticed it during the day so it could have even been dust coming up?

My question is, is it normal for even newer cars to blow some under hard acceleration? A few months ago I was behind a colleague at the lights he was in a 6 month old Falcon XR6 and he took off at full pace and I noticed some black smoke pour out of the exhaust, in a 6 month old car?

Mine gives a little black exhaust smoke under WOT, especially in first. I've seen many other cars do similar. I've always assumed a combination of "clearing out the cobwebs" and the smoke from the increased fuel being burnt under heavy acceleration. Would love to hear if it shouldn't happen, symptoms and possible solutions.

It is normal for petrol car to blow a bit of black smoke under full throttle or hard acceleration, it is just burnt carbon as it runs rich.

I notice this happens more in 'performance car'(XR6 turbo, GTI, V8 Merc....) than say a regular toyota yaris.

Yep, normal. Easy to see at night when vehicle headlights are behind. It won't look bad during the day.

Most OEM tunes run fairly safe (read:rich) at WOT. Not uncommon at all. They will blow more smoke in lower gears as they accelerate because the engine has less load on it.

Yeah I noticed that the Passat blows some smoke when accelerated hard. Was actually quite bad the first time I rev to 6k after I got it (couldn't see the car behind me in daylight!), seems to be much much less smoke now that I ve run a few bottles of injector cleaner through it (not sure if thats the reason or just that i've been using 98 and the previous owner didn't?)

Most cars blow some smoke under hard accelleration, thats why Italian Tune-ups are great for cars that are driven around town sedately. My Tdi blows smoke when the turbo is on full song

I have the same problem under acceleration with my Jetta TFSI 07. I was suspect at first but than I saw all these other VWs with the same problem. You can really see quite badly at night in someone elses headlights.
