1700 is fair if it iincludes timing belt and water pump.. mine was around the 1300 mark from an independent vw specialist (original parts though).

Timing belt and waterpump etc etc should've been changed at 105,00klms. The dealership where I work charge $980 for the major service then additional $550 for the DSG service. So I'm guessing $1700 is quite normal

there is much debate about this, the service book says 120k but the dealers say 105k. Some say the dealers are incorrect and others say it was officially changed by vw. who knows either way I changed mine at 105 just in case.

His dealer has probably quoted it to include the belt.

105K or 5 yrs for MK5. Diesels used to be 120k but now also revised to 105 or 5 yrs. You will hear different from place to place thatll always be the case, my opinion is there is no false economy.
