I would grab one of these Aircon Sanitizer's if you still find that the smell is there after the filter change.

            thanks for the reply..

I pulled out the pollen filter today and it was really clean...the car has only done 17,000KM and it is only around 8 months old so it can't be that quick to turn bad and plus the air is fairly clean around Perth compared to other cities....

Maybe the heat exchanger grew mould...or either the water isn't draining out from the air con unit....

going to buy a can of the air con sanitizer....it better work the for price I pay

Take it to your dealer and let them sort it out, there are established methods for sorting this one and one of them is expensive, if you mess around with it they may not cover it under warranty.

I had this problek with my 2 year old gti that had only done 25000km. Took apart the drivers side trim to get to the drain pip for the ac in case that was blocked...it wasnt.

Changed the pollen filter to no avail.

The mouldy smell would go after a few minutes but was annoying.
Also aprayed plenty of a very good ac sanitiser through the underbonnet ac intake and into the vents. Helped for a few weeks but the smell came back.

A thread i put on here about one year ago should cover all the details inlcuding how to get to the drain pipe (you cannot get to it from und the car!)

In the end i sold the car, not just because of the smell...

The dealer has a fix for this, it involves a machine that pumps a cleaner through the AC system. When I get time I'll put the details up on my website until then if anyone want's more details they can google it or see their dealer.

I asked my dealer, twice, while it was well under warranty and they said it would cost $200 to do the AC flush. And i"m not sure if that is a permanent solution, or something that would have to be repeated every year...
