Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • 06 Jetta Boot Gas Struts

    Hey guys,
Question for all those jetta owners out there. When you press the boot button on the remote, does your boot fully open or does it only pop up about a foot. Reason I ask is that I think that my gas struts may be stuffed. It seems like it wants to open all the way but just doesn't have the power. Thanks guys.

My boot only unlocks but doesn't lift up on it's own will. Perhaps I should look into new struts too.

Depends on how long I press the keyfob - if I hold longer than 5 secs say it will fully open, less 5 seconds than it will just open.

Mine changes its mind all the time.

Sometimes it goes all the way and sometimes it just pops a bit and thats it.

Might be a stupid questions but could temperature have something to do with it?

I usually just open the boor manually and it stays up when lifted so the struts must have enough pressure left in them to support the boot lid

In the UK jetta boots just pop the lock and you have to lift the lid, but in Aus 95% of Jetta's when held on the remote for 3 seconds will pop the lock and then the boot will open all the way.... Yes its to do with temp, over here in summer they open all the way but in winter they get lazy! might also need new struts but try lubricating the hinges and work the boot by hand agressively open / close fully right back to the rear screen then retry and you should be alot better and open all the way.....

I've noticed with the added weight of rain drops on the boot, mean you have to open it manually.

There are known issues with the struts.

I'd suggest giving the hinges a squirt with some WD-40 first, and see how it goes.
