  • Turbocharger Blown Up on a Golf GT TDI

    Hi All,

If anybody could direct me to a thread(s) about experiences on their turbocharger blowing up, that would be most useful.

I posted 3 months ago that a fuel injector on my Golf GT MY08 DSG TDI failed, and this time around the turbocharger has blown up -still on my dielership yard.

    Thanks,

    Thanks,
Were you thrashing it when it happened? Because if your were the log data will show it, I just hope they cover it under the warranty.

An overboost condition would trigger a fault and then a limp mode. That would then prevent further overboosting.

There's nothing stored in the ECU, on how you have driven it previously.

          Injectors are a known fault...

Turbos do go - How many k's has it done? Actually, turbos go quite often and the problem is exacerbated by driving the car hard and turning it off without letting it cool down...

Did GT TDI's ever come in a Gold or Champagne colour?
I've never seen a Golf in that colour before.

I meant golf, not gold. Done approx 80k on the clock and wasn't even trashing it, I never do. Commutes dail from sydney to wollongong so most distance travelled are highway kms. Warranty expires in 3 weeks time. Been chatting to VW australia about replacing the three other injectors. Hopeful, but they said they often rely on dealership's diagnosis. My dealer said all is well on the three original injectors. Was planning on getting a tiguan for the family, this experience might just change that...

The VNT1749VC on the GT is a pretty robust thing, and yours is the first one I can recall going, unlike the 1749VB unit in the 103 when chipped up to 125kw, plenty of them have gone kapow.

Still as mentioned, the turbo is always vunerable to damage, and keeping a good supply of clean oil, driving the car quietly a few minutes before turning off( so it's not too hot ), and ensuring it gets well filtered air all go together to prolong their lifespan. Whilst it's odd to see one go at those sort of kms, it's FAR more likely you will have injector problems with this engine, I'm not concerned about my turbo at all, even with how much extra work it is going to be doing shortly. Injectors, well I drive it pretty much planning how to pull to the side should they shut down..
