Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Timing belt change - MkV 2.0 TDi

Hoping I could get some advice from anyone on here who has had the timing belt changed on a 2.0 diesel. Did you go with the dealer or an independent, and if so any independent VW workshops in the Sydney area you could recommend? Regards

Anyone can do it, as long as they've got the crankshaft lock, and the camshaft pins.

Also, ask for them to order a timing belt KIT, and not just the belt. You'll pay a little more, but you'll get new pulleys and tensioner.

wow that's cheap, that must not include the water pump. I'd change that too while you got everything off.

Take it to a dealer or specialist, a majority of back street garages don't time them up properly

I'm in the same boat as well. I was quoted 950 for timing belt kit and water pump fitted at Liverpool VW.

To be honest I don't recall having the water pump done last time, it's due again. Does the belt need to come off to replace the pump ordinarily? Been serviced from new at Dealer I purchased it from.

The water pump is driven off the timing belt. To replace the pump, you have to pull the timing belt off.

Always a good idea to get T Belt and water pump done at the same time. However some people may do the water pump every other T belt change. Got mine done (both with tensioner kit etc) for around $800

Dealer suggested it was that cost, but they didn't think it necessary to attack the pump if it isn't weeping. If I still own it at the next major service I'll do it then, but has remained faultless for ~220000.

Doesn't matter whether it's leaking or not. That's not why they fail. The impeller is plastic, and can fatigue, causing it to fall off and potentially cook the engine.

That's probably a reasonable enough excuse.

For the sake of $200 extra, I would suggest that you get the water pump done seeing that it has done 200+ km without a pump change. Peace of mind like T-Belt change

The new design water pumps from VW have a different plastic now and this isnt as common as what it use to be . The water pumps now generally start leaking at the pressure relief valve .

$800 is the going rate for a timing belt with water pump for a tdi , thats how much I charge anyway .
