    Here's the photo as promised.

    It's the silver thing connected to the plastic thats sitting on that plastic bit also holding the cream coloured tube. Apparently it can slide down, and that causes the rattling.

      I'm bumping this thread to say thank you. It's pretty tricky to find. When sitting inside it sounds like it could be in your air conditioner fan between the steering wheel and door. When standing in front of the engine bay it sounds like it could be something in or near the timing belt. Just came out of nowhere after owning this for about a month.

      I've also got a 2008 Golf GTI.

        Hi all,
        I get the exact same sound described by all of you, in particular by Boon. Basically, a rattling noise will develop after I have run the A/C for around 5 mins. Even if I turn the A/C off it will continue for a little while but then stops. It also sounds like it is coming from the back left of the engine if you were looking at it from the front of the car. A few things I've noted;
        1. The noise will only start if I have run the A/C at some stage while driving.
        2. The noise is only audible when stationary and idling - as soon as the clutch is compressed the noise stops.
        3. The noise will not start at all if I do not run the A/C and does not affect the cars driving.

        Unlike you guys I have a Golf GT Sport my08, however from what you've described in your comments it sounds exactly like what I'm experiencing.

        I have taken the car to a registered VW mechanic who basically said it would cost a certain amount to diagnose what it was as he would have to take the engine apart and run tests, however he came for a 20 minute drive with me in the car and we tested it in various situations and in his opinion the noise was not affecting the car's ability to drive in any way and he gave it the all clear to drive away. He's said to bring it back if/when I have the spare dollars to investigate and actually want to spend the money... probably won't bother.
