Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • It happened again

Well today my GT Diesel golf refused to start again and only after 3 minutes of continuously cranking the engine did it start to splutter and start.
This is not the first time this has happened the first time i rang Road side assist and even they could not get it to start, and only through persistence by cranking did it start.
It has only happened since i had the DSG replaced and if i leave the car for a week and dont start it, Its like the Diesel has drained back into the tank and formed an Air lock ,
Ive written a letter to VWA explaining the situation and i'm waiting for a reply , has any other Diesel owners ever had this problem ?

You haven't had much luck with your GT have you? Couldn't possibly be the dreaded faulty injectors issue could it?

Occasionally mine doesn't kick over straight away (say once every 20 starts), but it always starts on the second go.

If an injector is seen to have failed it doesn't go intermittent. The car will not go.

True but I seem to recall there was someone here who had the injector issue and still managed to get the car running again to drive it to the dealership.

I had a similar issue with car not starting straight away after leaving it a few weeks.
Turned out to be the fuel filter not tightened correctly and letting the fuel drain back to tank.
Well this was the dealers excuse, never had another issue with it.

like benough said the car won't run, unless you unplug the faulty injector.

Yes this is one to watch , very common, the seal gets squashed and does leak back, you have to prime the fuel lift pump at least 4 times to eliminate it, also there is glow plug and wiring loom issues on these guys, scan will pick up that though, had at least 3 PD BKD engines this week not happy to start
                  cheers

Test the battery, and engine RPM when cranking. If the battery (and wiring, etc) tests ok, but the cranking speed is less than 280RPM (minimum for them to start up and run), it will most likely be a starter motor.

There was a TPI kicking about on it.

He cranked for 3 minutes, so we can almost eliminate the battery, if there are no error codes, I would be looking for the air in the fuel system, attach some clear tubing to the fuel filter hose, if you see the bubbles you found the cause.
