  • Mk5 GTI Buying Second Hand

    Hi Guys,

I have been looking at buying a second hand mk5 GTI and i am seeing a trend of them being way overpriced on sites like carsales.

    What i am looking for:
Less then 50,00km on the clock.
    Manual.
    Leather.
    Sunroof.
    Either White, Black Or Silver.
    In Good Condition.
    08 or later.

For Example online at the moment there is a 08 GTi
    Manual.
    Sunroof.
    Leather.
    35,000km.

But they are asking $39,900. I was quoted $41,800 (not even haggling) for a black mk6 with 18" Mdi on the road no more to pay. Comes with 3years warranty and its brand new!!!!!

Did VW cover the mk5 GTI's in gold or are these sellers not interested in actually selling their car???

I think they don't know what they are worth.. I'd think that for $30K you should be able to get one, but with what options and Kms varies as supply / demand changes.

IMO the "evolutionary" styling of the mk6 has meant that the mk5 hasn't depreciated as much as cars often do when a newer model comes out. Many people still seem to prefer the look of the mk5 too.

Still, you're exactly right, nearly $40k is only a depreciation of $6k or so in 2+ years and that's not right!

You can buy a Pirelli for cheaper than $40K. And the Pirelli comes with the same engine as the R - K04 turbo.

I did notice you can buy a Pirelli cheaper which just shows how off some people are when selling their mk5's GTI's.

As i am looking at 2008-2009 models they are also up for timing belts soon and not to mention transfering the car into my name (Have set aside around 1k) and a years worth of rego (Between $700-800). Its making the mk6 look a lot more tempting...

A 09 Popped up for $30350 a few weeks back with leather, black but no sunroof, i inquired and tried to see how much the seller was prepared to drop as he had it listed as an urgent sale. Asking price = $30,350 Most he was willing to negotiate $30,000... I still cant believe it haha.

If you can do without the sunroof then this is a fantastic example?

If you have to have the sunroof then this would be the cheapest and from the list of extra's sounds like a good deal.

Maybe its just me, but if people ask me what is my best price when selling a car I tell them what its listed for. The way I see it is that I (the seller) have put the price I am looking for in the ad, then it is up to the buyer to counter offer. Doesn't mean I won't negotiate. Maybe this bloke is the same?

That car started off at $27k then went up to $29,500 now $33k... also not too keen on buying one on the otherside of australia... it would be a massive pain to ship it back to canberra + going and having a look at it. If it was closer to home i would be interested in it but not for that price.

I would rather buy a new car for that price once you factor in stamp duty + rego a brand new one is only an extra couple of grand.

If it was an urgent sale i would think he would want to be upfront as much as possible, i have a big thing about not wanting to waste peoples time and would wish people would do the same thing too especially when it looks like i am going to have to travel a bit to find a good MK5.

Fair enough. Unfortunantly I've found that when selling any car you get numerous emails / text messages simply asking "what is your best price" or various illegible iterations of this question - you may have just been grouped with those guys!

As for buying a car interstate its not really that hard, get someone to inspect it, arrange payment and put it onto a truck. There are even companies that look after the whole process.

I'm not sure if you are interested in modified cars but if you are I have a car that ticks some of your boxes.

Hi Tyler, i believe that from the build year 08 onwards VW swapped the FSI engine for the TSI engine (EA88 and as such the timing belt got changed to a timing chain. Please correct me if im wrong guys, but it was one of the reasons my old man bought an 08 Jetta turbo rather than the earlier model.

You are correct, just had a quick google... wow you learn something new everyday. Thanks for the heads up. Is it still an engine out job to replace a timing chain?

That didn't happen here in Australia - only in America.
The engines in the MkV GTIs were FSI EA113 engines till the end of the run.
The EA888 only appeared on the MkVI GTIs.

Not if you option up all the extra's that this car has. If you want leather/sunroof/satnav on a brand new GTi expect to pay a LOT MORE than a few extra couple of grand.
