It's possible that the old battery was fine. Did you test it after you removed it?

Does the light come on when you press the buttons? Did it come on before?

No it doesn't but you can either fault find yourself and save yourself hundreds of dollars or just take the car to VW and let them do all the basics.

I have to open the key and clean contacts holding the battery once every 2-3 month. Also you might need to push contacts slightly towards the battery. I found originally PCB was not fixed firmly in place. Just keep in mind that if you leave the battery off for more than 10 minutes the board would lose its code and you will need to teach this remote with the second one. The procedure was published somewhere on the forum some time ago.

thanks hitorque. i will try to look that up. sounds about right, since i pulled apart the key to get the number off the battery and left it on my desk in pieces for a few hours.

I believe that after roughly 200 presses a key can lose it's coding. Save yourself the hassle and take it to a dealer, no other way to get around it mate. Make sure you bring your extra keys as well as they will need to be recoded too

I think I read somewhere, maybe even from the manual, that you should not repeatedly press the buttons on the remote if your not in range of your car. The fob will forget the code to prevent someone from trying to find your car if they picked up your keys and just go around pressing the button to see which car it unlocks.

One of my keys stopped working, so i took it to the local VW dealer and after 2 hrs could not reprogram it for the immobilizer every other thing worked lock ,unlock wind down the windows , so the dealer ordered me a new one from Malaysia said it might take up to 4 weeks before i receive it .
Lucky for me the Warranty runs out this week.
