  • Buying a car out of warranty - Yes or No?

Is it worth the risk considering that R32's aren't exactly cheap.....

Depends on the price, how much cash you have and so on. If you're looking for a definitive answer you won't get one, even if you provided specifics about a few cars because it comes down to you at the end of the day. Personally I'd try and get one with either factory warranty still remaining or the factory warranty extension.

I second this. Parts can be expensive, so the extra you pay will give you peace of mind / go a long way if something breaks.

For example, my lumbar support was replaced under warranty. I saw somewhere on this forum that if I didn't have a warranty I would have paid about $1500.

      Will definitely be extending mine.

i recommend not buying private, unless it has balance of NCW. least with buyin from a dealer, if it doesnt have NCW, it will have statutory warranty (3mth/5000ks) and you can extend it depending on the dealer..

Yeah I found getting things repaired under VW warranty was a bit of a problem, I had to really fight to prove that it was a warranty issue and some things they refused so sorry but I don't have a lot of faith in warranty. Sure it would be a handy thing to have but it wouldn't be the deal breaker for me when buying a car. Besides VW are built very well and generally quite reliable. I believe you can get a non-dealer extended warranty on any car these days ( essentially its like insurance ) so if its that important you can go down this path.

hmmm different to me. my r32 went in yesterday for a feew little issues which they have either fixed or are getting parts for to fix under warrantie. they even got a new gear shifter and surround because it was marked and the crome was lifting even though i didnt ask them about it.
as for buying one, it was something that i wanted due to getting a dsg but again its a personal choice.

God that sounds great - I wish I had that kind of service. I went in with a cracked engine cover - either it cracked on its own or they cracked it considering at that stage I never looked under the bonnet , only they did. They refused ....VW australia helpfully adviced me to take it up with the dealer. I went in to get a bent wheel jack replaced and they took 5 months to decide whether it was a warranty issue before finally getting me a new one.

The OP has been asking the same question in various guises since Sept last year. He/She still hasn't made up his/her mind since then.

That's ok buying a car isn't something that should be rushed and I encourage people to ask as many questions as possible before making a purchase. I'm in the same boat actually looking for my first Ferrari to buy - I've been asking lots of questions on forums before I decide to spend my savings on one and am sick to death of people on the forums sayings "hurry up and just buy one" and on the other hand saying " don't jump into buying one without finding everything there is to know".

Asking questions is advisable when the car is a Ferrari as they cost a lot to maintain. e.g. $16-$25K to replace a clutch in F355.

But vacillating on a VW for almost a year is taking it to the extreme.

Totally off thread topic but I've heard Duttons at Murray Bridge are really good at diagnosing and fixing warranty issues... Long way to drive but might be worth a shot?

Yes that's exactly what I did and they were more helpful - I'm out of warranty now so no longer an issue.

Now you've said that, I'm starting to wonder if it was you that told me they were good for warranties when I was asking about where to get my car serviced a few months ago...

Maybe...I've always been happy to praise Duttons - unlike the "other" dealer in Adelaide.
