I have just ordered my new toy (present for 20yrs in the Navy)…. Comfortline 2.0 Tdi and my son is insisting on the iPod adaptor. My question, is it worth it??
hey Welcome to the forum.
Congrads on your new toy. I have never actually used nor seen OEM ipod adaptor, but surely if you go for that option the sound quality is much better than using those FM transmitters to radio. The head unit I got came with input line, and I use it for Ipod, the quality is so much better than FM transmitter for sure.
I say go for it if it is not too expensive. it's convinient and the quality is great.
seen one working... i must admit its very clean much better than having cords around the place, but if its worth the hundreds of dollars im not so sure.
but then again, when it comes time to sign on the dotted line you could say you want it chucked in or you walk, im pretty sure theyd chuck one your way hehe.
I have a OEM iPod adapter in the GTI. We got it thrown in, in the deal when buying the car. If you can get it throw in then yes. If you have to pay then i would get the Connect2 Kit the http://www.thecarkitcompany.com.au/ sells.
The connect2 allows you to still control the iPod via the iPod itself and access all the playlist while connected as well as the headunit. The OEM one locks the iPod so you can't change playlist on the iPod. You can only control it via the head unit and use the first 5 playlist.
Sound quality of the OEM one is good - no noise in the signal at all. I have not heard one using the connect2 kit but from what i have read it is just as good sound wise.
I have the OEM one and think that it is adequate. Value for money is subjective, but I like the fact that it works simply, was installed pre-delivery and from what I can tell is covered by the warranty so if there is ever a problem the dealer can replace/re-install.

If you have an Ipod yourself. YES
If its just so your son can connect his own Ipod. then HECK NO! do u really want to listen to his music?
Have got an OEM one myself......love my music, so it was a must have, however.....
.....sound quality is actually very good, but functionality is basoulutely hopeless. Certainly not as good as the OEM BMW or Merc ones.
* You cannot control the iPod itself once connect, unit is locked out and only the head unit control works
* There is no display whatsoever on the head unit from the iPod: no track name, artist, title...nothing (kinda defeats the purpose of having all your music with you if you cannot find it)
* you must know what you want to listen to before you leave the house, as you can only select between the pre-defined playlists
* If you wish to listen to a specific track or artist once away from your PC (on the road), you must disconnect the unit, scroll to that artist, select them, plug the unit back in....damn hard if you are the only one in the car
* It can be very laggy when moving between tracks
It is however, neat, secure and great sounding. So the choice is yours!!!

I have the OEM adaptor and agree with Blur32's points I too was a bit underwhelmed whith the playlist control features.
Quality on iPods is always going to be dubious as it is compressed audio files unless you have your iTunes music imported at a higher quality.
That being said as long as you dont mind preparing and uploading playlists it is fantastic for long trips and as Blur32 said you can disconnect and change albums & tracks on the fly if you realy want to.
At the end of the day even though, it was expensive, the fact that it is factory and under warranty is comforting.

about to order a new gti, so naturally i'm interested in the ipod kit. a few questions about the above:
1) no display - i recall seeing some pics on another vw forum of the artist and track name being displayed on the standard HU. is it possible that it's just a matter of getting the right id tag version in the files?
2) playlists - do these correspond to the playlists you define in itunes? or does the ipod kit come up with its own somehow?
Current: MY18 Golf R 7.5 DSG - FOR SALE Previous: MY11.5 RBR DSG

1) Nothing to do with ID tags I'm afraid! Have tried a couple of things, to no avail. Own a computer store (and previously a Mac store) and have had my techo try all the tricks. Bugger!!!
2)plays the first 5 playlists as per your itunes

i just dug (dag?) around this forum a whole lot (haven't stopped since that post lol) and realised that the MY08 golfs will have mp3 capability built in (as long as you don't have satnav)... looks like i won't need the ipod adapter after all

Try waiting 6 months, I think your lucky if it will only be 3 months.

VW are including the iPod adapter with purchases at the moment. See if you can get one that way. I know you decided not to get one but hey... it's free.
