  • Thinking of my first VW...Is this good value?

    Hey guys,

I'm new to this, so I thought I'd intro myself before I ask my question...I'm a mid 20 something male from Brissy who works full time..about to take the plunge..the VW Golf GTi plunge. I've been looking at them for a while..and a very tempting offer has come across me by a mutual friend..

I'm currently looking at a gorgeous Mk V Golf GTi DSG..it has about 46k's on the clock, log book serviced by VW and comes with iPod connectivity, sunroof and leather. The paint work and interior is in beautiful condition, and comes with an extended warranty..and am being offered to buy it for just over $28k for it...is this a good deal?

It's just a bit of a bizzare feeling for me, coming out of a (newer) 2008 Suzuki Swift into a car that's costing more than twice than what I currently drive, and is a year older...but after test driving the VW, you do get alot more 'car' for your buck.

Tips, advice and criticism much appreciated...!

The price isn't bad but I would try and get it for $26K or thereabouts, especially if the warranty hasn't been extended.

Actually reckon it is a pretty good price. You obviously are on the brink of the decision, and suspect that you are looking for comfort you won't regret the decision.
Main thing I'd be looking at is service history, the 60k service has to be done at 4 years, and is pricey for the dsg's. Even considering that I still reckon the price is good.

my GT Sport is almost 3 years old with only 25,000kms (blame the prev owner for doing 3000 in first year).... do you think ill need the full service even if i'm nowhere near the 60,000 mark?

2007 Gti with DSG , low mileage, leather and sunroof for $28k? Sounds like a good deal to me but having said that its not a fantastic deal from a friend - considering for similar money you can get an 08 model with less mileage, also with sunroof and leather but also with SatNav and reversing camera -

DSG service is based on kilometres traveled and is not time dependent. Having said that I would get it done at 5 years even if you've only got 45,000kms on it.

              Hey guys,

I sure am on the brink of a decision..I am somewhat swayed to take the plunge, though in the link in the last reply suggests I make a counter offer of circa 27k....!

..or would it be worth taking a bigger plunge to get a newer car/model? The difference is, I suppose, the coin, as I would be able to pay this one off in just over a year, which is what I'd very much prefer..but then again there's the depreciation factor of the Mk V when an Mk VII gets released.

Also, I noticed some damage from wear and tear in the right hugger/wing of the drivers seat..is this normal? Can it be repaired? Any indicator on how much this may cost? How exciting...but nervous at the same time!

27K would be a good price....

Only you can make that decision but in my opinion the newer mk6's aren't that much better, more like an Mk5.5 I say so .
Definitely don't jump into the decision without looking at other options , there's a lot of cars you can buy for $27,000 - all depends on what you want really, there's also other Golf models that you can buy - the Gti may not be the best choice - I'd almost be tempted to get a Mk4 R32 for that of money but hey that's me.

Too late! I made an offer of 27.5 and it was accepted. Now it's the waiting game of getting it mechanically looked over by a specialist mechanic next Monday (it was the earliest appointment they had, and was recommended by a friend who owns an Audi)...and the sale goes on from there! . I hope I've made a good decision in purchasing this ride...a little bit impulsive, but it's a car I've wanted for a few years now...

..now to get rid of the old car....damn!

Hey if its a car you've always wanted then why not... like we said at that price its not a bad deal - not a bargain but still a good buy. I would have looked at the one in Brisbane I linked you before but I guess its convenient that the one you bought is local. Good luck with the mechanical inspection and welcome to the team.

I'd be feeling really good about your purchase if I were you, I bought a 2007 Golf GTi last month with 46k on the clock which DIDN'T include iPod connectivity, sunroof, leather or extended warranty. I also paid the same as you! I am happy with the price I got considering they were all around the high 20's low 30's when I was looking with more km's

Very happy with the car and I bet you will be too! Enjoy

Congrats, hope it all checks out. Re the leather seat wearing, should be able to be sorted by a motor trimmer.
And guys. Remember, by telling him that he's paying too much, all you are doing is bringing the market down, and hurting our resale when it comes time to sell

While I'm at it, does anyone know of any good independent VW specialist mechanic in Brisbane that I can take the car to for a prepurchase inspection??

The one I want in Coorparoo is booked out until Monday .

You can try Jimmy mac at alba European, but I think it is the case with all the good mechanics around.
