    options:

    225/45/17 or 225/50/17 or 235/45/17?

Hey all. I have a 2L Tdi Mk5. Currently running 16x7 Contour with 225-50-16 which gives the rims slight protection from gutters. With these tyres, I get a 10% error on my speedo when checked with GPS. ie: 110kph speedo = 100km/h actual etc.

As I now have 17 inch rims to replace the 16 inch rims I'm considering tyre possibilities and would appreciate any expertise, experience and opinion. Vehicle is regular driving in town and country. No racing of any kind. Comfort, handling and safety are important.

    1. 225-45-17
: negatives - lower profile more bumps on country roads, no rim protection from gutter scrubbing, speedo error remains, higher final drive ratio
: postives - lower profile handling

    2. 225-50-17
: negatives - higher profile, no rim protection from gutter scrubbing
: postivies - speedo more accurate, lower final drive ratio

    235-45-17
    : negatives - unsure..possibly width, heavier weight
: positive - rim protected from gutter scrubbing, popular size tyre (commode/falcon) size so cheaper for same quality of above tyre options. accurate speedo, lower final drive ratio

I'm not sure how the 235 will fit regarding legal (QLD) and car's fenders/mudguards?

At this stage I'm stuck between option 2 and 3. Option 2 as less weight. Option 3 due to rim protection and cheaper tyres due to more popular size.

    Thanks, Bushy.

PS: Secondary to size is brand & model. Tyre choice so far (for 225 & 235) is Dunlop SP Sport 9000, Federal 595 SS as a start as no Goodyear F1 Eagle GSD3 seem available anymore. I'm open to suggestions there too for a safe wet and dry tyre.

I appreciate any advice etc. Thanks!

    Hi there

Are you're new 17's 7 or 7.7 inches wide? If they are GTI rims they'll be 7.5.

If so 235-45-17 will be better in terms of grip, you won't get any guard issues at stock ride height, but you may get slight rolling of the tyre.

It sounds to me your main aim here is comfort and correct speedo. In that case go for the 225-50-17. You won't have any safety concerns at that size, unless you buy crap tyres

Hi Benough. RIms are 7.5 wide. Rolling of the tyre..what do you mean? Thanks for the post. as seen here:

DEAD THREAD as above CLICK HYPERLINK INSTEAD I'm still undecided regarding 225-50-17 and 235-45-17 because (my perceptions) of the negative and positives of both and surmising a better tyre is cheaper in 235-45-17?

Not buying crap tyres...that is for sure but will be buying either size from ebay as local shops seem much more expensive. 235-45-17 seems better value for less than 225-50-17 on ebay as well..

I've run a few sets of 235's on the stock GTI rims, they are fine. Hell, I've got a set with 1/3 worn tyres you can buy if you want!

As you say, speedo is a little more correct (now its display of 110, actual = 105), grip is up, the "roll" as mentioned above isn't a issue. (its when the tyre grips and flex's the sidewall, ie no bluge one side, lots of bulge on the other, when going around a corner hard.)
If your stock height its fine, maybe a light touch on hard bumps but thats it. if your really worried remove the screw from the guard and its fixed, you can even lower 1-2" and its still fine.

as your in brisbane, check option1garage.com.au and get some prices for Kumho KU31's. for the money vs grip vs noise vs wear they are great value, should be 150 a corner, maybe less.
Ducks nuts are apparently Goodyear F1's for long term

I'd run 235s (I think I did when I had 17"s actually). GSD3 aren't that good a tyre unless you can get the German made ones. Dunlop Sport aren't my cup of tea either.

How much do you have to spend on tyres?
