NEED ADVISE - Funny smell is coming from air vents inside...

Hi All,

I have a 2008 Jetta FSI. Every time I exhilarate there is a smell like acetone or gas or something like that coming to the inside of the car via air vents.

Anyone has a clue what it could be and where it could come from?

Probably something to to with all that exhilaration and speed, maybe add some ice...

Realistically though, it could be caused if you turn off the air con as that can cause a bad smell from the vents... Acetone is pretty extreme and a sickly sweet smell by comparison.

no, it's the one in the passengers side footwell area. Like an airfilter. If it's banked up with too much vegetable matter, they will start to decompose & smell. It's a good idea to change them every 12 months - they are cheap.
There are several types of cabin Filter: Plain paper - it just filters. Activated Carbon Impregnated - removes odours.

You might also be getting some fungal growth on your AC Evaporator. try turning your AC off about 5 minutes before you reach your destination. This will dry out the fins on the evaporator & stop mould growth

I sometimes get it too, but I always try and turn the AC off before I get home.
Smells like LP gas to me, like someone is filling a bottle nearby. Not acetone (I'd know if it was that - gives me a splitting headache - too much fibreglassing)
Will check the cabin filter - good idea

My bet would be that the pollen filter is filthy, i had miine replaced when i got the car and it was brown and stunk
