  • Strange Noise

Hi all, my wife and I own a 2008 Mk5 Golf 2.0 TDI Pacific (manual) that we purchased new. It now has just over 70,000 K’s on the clock and has always been serviced on time, initially by the dealer and later on by a VW specialist.
I wasn’t sure if this was best put in the Diesel or MK5 section so mods please move if needed.
So far the car has run like a dream without a single issue however; lately I’ve noticed it has developed what could be described as a whistle/whine noise coming from the front under certain conditions. I’m guessing it’s coming from the turbo but this is really only an educated guess.

The noise is only present on either a very light or trailing throttle and seems to have a number of resonant frequencies between about 1400 to 1800 RPM.
It’s not your typical high pitch turbo whistle, and in frequency is more like a drive-train whine but of a whistle type nature, if that makes sense.
It seems to be slightly louder in the first few mins of driving from cold but is also present at operating temp. In the scheme of things it’s not that loud but it’s enough to get my attention.

An issue I have is that the warranty is about to expire within the next 3 weeks and we had decided not to purchase the extended warranty, but now I’m not so sure that was a wise decision.

If this is just a typical noise that occurs as the car/engine ages I’m happy to live with it providing it doesn’t get substantially louder.

If anybody has experienced a similar noise that knows what the cause is, and if it’s likely to develop into anything more sinister it would be great to hear from you.

Certainly sounds like Induction noise from the turbo - mine has had it from new. Maybe try taking your airbox off and going for drive around the block - if that same whine you are hearing is now intensified its definatelly the turbo. If its still there at the same volume than its something else.
Good luck with it - I suspect the stealer will just say its normal even though its not.

Yes, mine started doing that too, goes up and down with the turbo but isn't the high pitched turbo whine. Kind of like a low pitched turbo whine.

No idea what it is, will point out to dealer next service (which they will then blame on bad fuel like they do with every other thing the car does).
