    Im currently going through this at the moment. I have test driven both and up untill it fell apart last week had a Gti. The R32 is my prefered car but the price on this gti was good. Now im hunting for a r32 again as the price difference is small (around 2k more) and id rather the r32.
    Each to their own, i love the note of the r32 however the 'pop' of the gti (DSG) is addictive too.
    MKV R32 - no mods..........yet

      I don't think you can judge the car by it's driver. The GTI driver might not have been a good driver and if it was a public road, I too wouldn't be trying to over take at high speed in a race.

      The GTI engine is torquey too, it is not only the V6 that is. In the stock GTI and R32, the R32, runs out of puff before the GTI does.

        You also get the pop on the V6 with DSG... Put a aftermarket exhaust and it becomes twice as loud (assume same with GTI)

        Winton is a race track in Vic - the guy was in his 40's & had twice the experience as myself on the track. Was standard GTI not the Pirelli with better turbo

              Mate I traded my BA XR6 for Jetta Turbo DSG. It is basically a GTI with the boot. A massive boot. Best thing I've ever done. I absolutely love the car. Also it is not as thirsty as XR6, dont even compare it with XR6T. With the xr6 I used to do 450 km (68 lt of tank). with the jetta I do 700 with the full tank. I am a very happy man

                I'm still not keen on a diesel.
                As for the turbo Jetta, I've thought about them (still a bit iffy on the fat arse. Love the LED's though), tried my sister in-law's atmo 2.0L.
                I like their prices compared to the GTI but are they mechanically identical to the hatch?
                Is the rear suspension the same?
                The suspension tune is different?

                  What? This is absolute rubbish! The R32 does not run out of puff at all! Well mine doesnt anyway. I'm sorry but there is no substiute for the gutsy linear grunt that the R32 has from about 3k to redline. And pottering around in 4th gear at around 60-70km/h the R32 is so incredibly responsive (well mine is anyway).

                    Jetta TFSI: The GTI in Clark Kent attire. You'd probably want to mod whatever car you buy anyway; the Jetta gives the same result but with the huge boot capacity and it's a bit more interesting, IMHO since it has the ability to take a family on a long trip with a ton of luggage, yet can also take you on a fund drive through the twisties. The engine is the same as the GTI but you miss out on a few unique, sporty GTI interior bits but they can be swapped over anyway.

                      If you want great economy with good performance then get a 125 TDI. An ecu tune is a relateively cheap simple mod if you're after more power.

                      I'd recommend driving a gutsy diesel model before arriving at a decision if economy is high on your priority list.

                          While being totally biased....I love my R32. It is a great place to be. Your average bogun has no idea what it is, only enthusiasts have a clue that it is a true sports car. It goes hard, sounds awesome and looks sweet. While it uses a bit of fuel, you are not going to get that great go an sound without using some fuel. They even smell great inside!

                          There are a lot of GTIs out there and only a few R32s.

                            They are the same if not identical running gear.. As you can tell, I went for the fat assed GTI

                            A 125TDI with a tune would be up close to a 147TSI time.

                                You'd have to have an average of 7.8l/100kms to get 700kms out of a typical 55litre tank of fuel so although its probably doable on a flat highway with no air con this would be the best case scenario - no chance you'd get that kind of economy around the city whereas I get anwhere from 750km - 850kms easily with city driving all the time in mine.
