Hi Caroline,
Just checking to see when you will send the email confirming that:
235/35/19 load rating 91Y is the correct tyre to put on my Passat R36 when upgrading to 19 inch wheels
I would like to order the tyres today and I want to make sure I have ordered the correct ones.
Kind regards,
Costa

LOL
You guys crack me up with all that you're wrong your right BS.
Searching for similar answers i came across this older forum. So if you do too, check out section 4 of this document by transport/infrasturcture. There are also other LS sections related to brakes etc.
It clarifies what is legal VS not legal. This is what the po-po, department of transport or equiv vehicle registration bodies in your state, insurance companies will use to determine what mods without certification (without application/approval for light vehicle mod).
if you sit outside these "regulations" insurance companies will happily and rightfully refuse payment to any claim. They employ people who know these very well, just so they can find the "irregular mod" and fist you right up your guts if the time comes.
It'd read it before acting on your mods. Defect notices and inspections suck, and this is what you'll have to face if your mods require certification and if you don't have them, bye bye.
it's pretty straight forward.
if the link dies, this is the title
NATIONAL CODE OF PRACTICE for LIGHT VEHICLE CONSTRUCTION and MODIFICATION
SECTION LS TYRES, RIMS, SUSPENSION AND STEERING

I'm going for the 19s but only because I'm in Victoria and am guiding myself via VicRoads Guidelines where tyre placard is not mentioned at all. I'll explain my decision process below. I have seen however the RTA guidelines for example which state "Any replacement tyre must have a load rating equal to or better than the rating of the original tyres fitted by the vehicle manufacturer". If my car was registered in NSW, I don't think I would have got my 19s.
The following is my own decision making process that resulted in my decision in Victoria to get my 19s. I am not by any means saying that my process is right for you in your situation.
1) First an foremost, advice from this forum. It has been great getting both sides.
2) I had a good read of the VicRoads policy as as mentioned above, this does not state anything about the tyre placard in the Intro or Wheels and Tyres section. Specific to the Wheels and Tyres section about load ratings, it states "Rim and tyre combinations must be in accordance with the recommendations contained in the Tyre and Tim Standards Manual published by the Tyre and Rim Association of Australia and have a load and speed rating equal to or better than that required by the standards.
3) I contacted the Tyre and Rim Association who confirmed the minimum load rating for the two sizes of tyres for the rim I am getting.
- 235/35r19: 91
- 225/35r19: 88
4) Therefore, I could even get the 225/35r19s but so that I am at least closer to the 92, I'm going for the 235/35r19s even though the tyres will cost me $120 more.
It's been a bloody tough process for me but I'm glad my dream will be realised and in a way that I can sleep (drive) at ease.
MANY THANKS ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wheels confirmed...tyres confirmed...
The tyres have been knocked back for roadworthy and the mechanic advised I require the minimum load rating as per what the tyre placard states? as per this thread this type of tyre only goes to 88 ???
any help would be much appreciated!
