  • Turbo upgrades? Any of the Jap turbos?

Hey guys just wondering if anyone has performed any other form of turbo upgrades apart from the usual K04 kit? i am aware of the GT series of turbo's but i cant justify 3k or so for a turbo.

Has anyone ever played around with Jap factory turbo's and how they fair against the standard Mk5 item. I know the Mitsubishi Evo turbo's can run 18psi from factory and the Evolution is a quick car out of the factory? how would a MK5 fair with such a turbo opposed to the K04, also, what about other brands? like Subaru or for example a Toyota Supra turbo?

i understand that a custom manifold will have to be made, but would any of the above turbo's yeild better results than the K04? i understand that they are vaccume wastegated, so if i tap into the pressure side of the intake it should be ok to control boost pressure shouldnt it?

I think the best option for u is maybe a turbo off a detroit diesel truck! Problem with the jap turbos is well just that they are made for lesser cars like an evo or wrx or even worse a S15

I really hope that was tongue in cheek - technology wise, there is nothing wrong with the turbos fitted to Japanese cars.

I would say that if you were able to get a turbo from a Japanese car properly plumbed up to a VW, you would have to spend a few sessions at a tuner with a dyno to create a (very) customised ECU map as it would most likely behave quite differently to the 'normal' turbo. This would also apply to fitted other Garrett (or KKK etc) turbos too, of course.

Having FSI will make things tricky as there are a very limited amount of injector sizes available. Your best to work within the confines of what is available, both for tuning and hardware.

The twin scroll turbos on the evos are wicked, they have the best lag and flow attributes of nearly any standard turbo car I've driven, and have great potential before an upgraded turbo is needed. Sorry for getting off-topic...

I don't think it will be a simple or cost efficient task to get any of the Jap turbos on there.
