Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • GT vs GT Sport

Just curious as to what the differences are?

A quick hunt around yields little info...

I believe the GT was an older model which was only available in the 1.4L petrol variant. It was replaced by the GT Sport which was available with the 1.4L petrol or a 2.0 diesel. Pretty sure there are only minor differences between the GT and GT Sport.

Yes Jazd is correct, the differences were mainly cosmetic- the GT and GT Sport in 1.4TSI guise are virtually identical.

Yep - other than the engine differences, all the differences are cosmetic.
Off the top of my head:
GT Sport badge on the front vs GT
No GT badge on the back - replaced by 2.0TSI or 2.0TDI
Black headlamp bezels (a la GTI) vs silver on the GT
Black centre bumper 'nose' vs body colour on GT
Bolsters on the seats are plain grey vs Red Brick Pattern on the GT
Pretty sure the GT Sport came with an MP3 head unit (can anyone verify this?)
Battery cover 'soft' variety vs Hard plastic on the GT
No boost gauge on the TDI GT Sport (obviously)
Think Dark Blue Metallic an option on the GT Sport (?)

From memory 420 GTs were imported, gawd knows how many GT Sports...

Yep I remember being told that.
Another difference I think is that the sunshields in the GT Sport are extendable.
And I also believe that the ECU software is a different version to that of the original GT ( including the factory recall update )

Yeah my GT Sport had a MP3 head unit, I think this is more to do with the fact that it is the MY08 variant though.

Again that was a MY08 improvement so I dont think any plain GTs would have it.

Mine does. AFAIK they were the only MY07 car to have them.

Yes they all did (come with full height MFDs). My GT does and it didn't come with Sat Nav either.

I've heard that the GTs were sold full height MFDs as standard before the GTI's did as standard (non-SatNav GTIs)

True - was a source of some GTI-envy for a while. Was about 3 months before the GTIs started appearing with full height MFDs.

Didn't know about the extendable sun visors on the Sport - I'd kill for them...

+1 .... For us shorties the sunvisors on the mkv gti are a joke! Can you retro fit the extendable visors?

There were also on the MKV GTI... so you may already have them.
Unless they were included in a MY update.

Ermmm...don't extendable sun visors just allow one to move the visor length wise (along the spindle) when turned to shade the side window? AFAIK It doesn't actually extend the visor itself (either in length or width).

And aren't they specifically for the 3Dr models which have longer door window glass? The side windows on the 5DR are shorter so do not need this functionality.

Besides, all GTs and GT Sports imported into Australia were 5DR.

If the answer is yes to both questions, they won't really be useful for shorter people.

^^Oh Barney, TSI only on the back of the petrol version Hahaha

Other than that small discretion, all the differences seem to be covered
