Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled
After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.
Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before.
We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

AFAIK, you don't need a canbus upgrade with aftermarket gps units. The battery drain issue with RNS510 relates to how the canbus talks to the radio when the ignition is switched off. The canbus will look for the radio and drain the battery if you have an early car and is not compatible with the gen3 radios like the RNS. If your auto elecs are any good, they should be able to wire up your aftermarket unit without draining the battery. The only problem with aftermarket unit is that when your key is switched off, but not pulled from the lock, you probably won't have any radio. Oh, plus you might need someone with Vagcom to code the car so that the canbus is not searching for a radio all the time, thus draining your battery as well.sigpic2009 .:R32 • 5Door • Black Magic • DSG • Sunroof • Stubby Antenna

Define aftermarket. For a universal unit, like alpine, kenwood etc, you will need a canbus adapter. It is possible to wire one up, but the VW's do not have an "accessory" position, so to listen to radio with the engine off means all auxiliaries are on.
For a "VW Fit" one, ie one that has the same shape as the VW one, you shouldn't need one though.
