Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Coil Packs

    Im going in for a 60k service for a dsg gti and going to change spark plugs. Questions is should the coil packs and cam follower be changed as well? When is it necessary to change them anyway? The original cam follower was changed at 20,000kms with the APR fuel pump upgrade..

    you've done 40k on your cam follower with a HPFP? All I can say is you are one lucky man... it is recommended to change them every 10k SPECIALLY with an upgraded pump. Not sure what model your car is, but it might be worth looking into the revision camshafts as well. Those fuel pumps give the internals a beating.. so better be safe that sorry.

    As for coil packs, you can buy the set of 4 from ecstuning.com for about $80.. so you might aswell. I know the stealerships charge about $90 each for them.

      I just had my 07 GTi coilpacks replaced under a recall at the dealer for my 60k, there is another thread in here about it.

        What he said ^

        Wait and see whether your vehicle is eligible for replacement coil packs, courtesy of Volkswagen.

        As for the cam follower, I guess that'd be up to your wallet's and technician's descretion.

          +1

          I got mine replaced for free due to the recall, check with vw before you buy a new set

          As for the cam follower 70-80 dollars from ecs took me 15 minutes to check it, think oh **** thats bad and then change it :S

          Here's a link to the diy i used if you wanna check it;

          *I strongly recommend use of gloves and safety glasses when doing this DIY cause the fuel pressure in a Direct injection system is high enough to penetrate through your skin :S

          Hope that helps
