Mk5 GTI honeycomb question...

The honeycomb section of my cars grille seems to require some maintenance to keep it looking new. I'm considering painting it (properly) with a gloss black finish to match the grille surround. The all gloss grille looks good on the Mk6, and I think it would make for a cleaner finish...

Any thoughts?

You've made me realise what it is that makes the MkVI GTI look cheap - the protruding glossy honeycomb grill! I couldn't figure it out previously.

It doesn't protrude in my opinion. If my memory serves me correctly, it's flush with the bonnet. The only protruding feature would be the VW badge, similar to the arrangement on a Mk5.

i did the grill on the gti today with tyre shine and an old towel its pretty much a slot by slot job but looks really good now, will see how long it lasts, might try it with a tyre gel or something

I do the type shine thing, with a small cloth and as you mentioned go along slot by slot. I don't mind doing that, it doesn't take too long.

I'm simply interested to know if anyone has already gone down the gloss black path.

I reckon it'd look pretty good.

The plastics on early ones are really starting to deteriorate now.

I just repainted all of my grilles. Satin black with clear coat. I put a black badge in too. The grilles look new again, but I'm not convinced on the black badge.

I need to recondition my lower GTI grill - I might try the tire shine idea.

you would want to make sure you sand well in every little crevice... if it started to peel it would look worse than a faded grille

No need to sand. Clean well with a good product, prime and paint.
