  • MKV GTI Manual Clutch

    Hi All

Just wondering how many km's I should expect to get out of my manual clutch on a GTI?

Has anyone had their's replaced? If so, how many clicks did you get and what was the cost of replacement?

    Thanks

I'd be interested to know the mileage of the clutch for those who frequently use engine braking vs those that don't

Is yours slipping? Depending on how you drive you may wear out the DMF (dual mass flywheel) first...

You should get over 100,000k's out of both if you are careful, if you are unlucky the DMF will go first and start rattling. It's more common for it to die in Diesels though...

I think clutch wear is more likely for those who ride clutches more so then those who use engine braking. Riding a clutch on a hill is extremely bad for a clutch but sometimes its just unavoidable. I have 115k on my mkv gti manual and the clutch still feels 100% fine, no slipping or anything like that. My last manual car was an A4 Audi 1.8t and i got 180k out of that before i had issues with the clutch.

I only have 45K on my car, so no slip yet. I was just curious as I have never seen any posts re clutch wear on these forums and I know clutch replacement in FWD cars can be costly.

Since picking up this car new, I have however changed my driving style and no longer use engine braking (unless absolutely necessary) in an attempt to reduce clutch wear and increase durability. I must admit though, I do miss using regular engine braking and wonder if I am just being paranoid? Do you think this is overkill?

As Jessv3 said, clutches wear from slipping, not from engine braking (unless you ride/slip the clutch when slowing down.... please don't say you do this).
I haven't ever had to replace clutches in any of the cars I've owned, or driven, approaching 200K. There shouldn't be a reason to replace it, unless the car has been abused, has siginifcantly moe power than standard, or has an incompetent driver.

Yes its overkill, not using engine braking can be dangerous and can lead to premature brake wear, which over the life time of a car will cost you more then a clutch replacement.

Anyone have to report any kms at which they replaced their manual's clutch?

I have recently had mine done in a GTI at ~68000km and it was not cheap . . . about $2300 for a complete replacement with an aftermarket clutch. I would have expected many more miles. My V40 manual had around 110000km on it when I sold it and was not showing any signs of clutch wear and that car was a lemon. Boy was I happy when that rolled off into the sunset.

I am very gentle on the clutch but I do change gears a lot, probably too much I have decided, but I do not think such use, even if excessive, should have led to premature aging of the clutch.

So I was wondering how many miles the clutch has lasted in others' cars.
If the answer to the Monty Hall problem was 50/50, the contestant, on average, would win the car 50% of the time simply by sticking with their original guess...but you can only win a one-in-three guessing game 33.33% of the time so it can't be 50/50, can it?

I'm about to clock over 210,000 on the original clutch and no sign of problems. (touch wood)

I do use a lot of engine braking to slow for lights ahead. Doesn't seem to have any issues.

As a positive consequence my brake life is also long; the current pads and rotors have done 105,000 and will probably and easily get to 120,000.

Not a GTI owner but my MK5 TDI still has original clutch at 178,000 and feels as good as new. I also tend to use engine braking more than that middle pedal thingy, which probably explains why I replaced the original rear rotors and pads at 165,000, with the original fronts still having tons of life left in them.
I used to be indecisive - now I'm just not sure....
