Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I do think the GTi looks better with all the skirts, better steering wheel and wheels but over the years I have added a number of these GTi parts to my GT so visually they are on par now. I prefer the engine in mine though - love the massive torque from this beast and enjoy the fuel economy over a GTi. Resale value is big bonus too.
if i was buying NEW, i'd go the GT, but at 2nd hand price, i'd rather the GTI

New the GT TDI was about 2.5k cheaper then the GTI, by time you add up everything you've spent on it im sure the GTI will weigh up as the cheaper option. On the used car market now because the rarity of the GT TDI they seem to have held their value quite well, and the gap has furthered even more, when i was looking 1yr ago i was keen on a GT TDI but the cheapest i could find was low 30's, where as the GTI's were mid to low 20's.

No not really, what I've spent on mine to get it visually more like a GTi ( skirts/ steering wheel ) is less an $1000. I've certainly spent more than $2500 all for all of those other things I have on the car now but then you can't compare it with a stock GTi either anymore.

ok, i test drove a GT TSI, a GT TDI a GTI and a TDI Pacific

i chose a GT TSI for a few reasons:

1: Power delivery is the most linear IMO. had to consider that i would be dropping back to a one car family and that my wife would not be keen on the rorty power of GTI, or the short torque band of TDI's.
2: truck loads of GTI's on road (for a good reason!)
3: price. low kms DSG GTI's were mid to high 30's. GT TDI's were not around 2nd hand only new which meant too much $$ and i found my GT TSI DSG with 3,800kms for $31k..

so yeah, i'm in a GT TSI

Like MariusGT I drove them all.

Had my heart set on a GTI up 'til the time I drove the GT.

For me the GT offered enough performance, a little nicer ride, and that delicious supercharger sound every time you take off.
Other upsides were better economy (no biggy for me) and far less of them on the road than GTIs.

It's up to you, though. With those 2 choices, you'll get at least that number of different opinions...

                Wooooaaahhh Barney- too right!!!

That SC sound still has me muting the stereo and putting all 4 windows down just so I can hear it. I have never driven a car where I did that sooooo often.

To my surprise the GTI's turbo is quite loud as well, even with the windows up on a cold day you can still clearly hear the turbo spooling up right off idle.

For me to consider buying a mark 5 gti,1.4 gt or 2.0 gt will be determine by the price.Honestly ,they all are great cars to drive.Smooth torque.......
I had great memories of my 08 gti dsg.sun-roof,extreme low milage of under 8500km .The down side of too many times to the workshop.Still it is great and a fine machine.
