  • Pads & Rotors GT Sport TDI

I have been told after my 70k service today that I need a new set of pads on rotors on my 08 oiler, bit surprised I need new rotors but AVW in Adelaide, who service the car are honest guys so I trust their call.

They have quoted $450 to do the job, just wondering if this is a far price or is there a more economical way to do the work without compromising quality?

    Cheers

    Neil

My rear rotors and pads are almost shot at 65k, so it's normal, as the VW's pull up on the rear first to stop dive. The fronts are the same as the GTI so you can use any GTI equivalent, but the rears are specific to the GT's, so GTI ones or equals won't work. Have a chat to GT Tom, he's a bit of a brake guru there.

      Hi Greg,

Just to clarrify please, are you saying the Pads/sizes in the GT are different to the GTI or the rotars and pads ?

Sorry it was Paul_OH that sent me a great rear brake pm a while back, knew it was one of those 1.4 guys!

        G'day Greg,
Just saw your post re: brakes and the search beginning for replacements, hopefully I can save you some ground work.
The GT rears from what I can gather are unique in the VW range however are quite common on Audi A3s. I got told at last service (45K) that mine would need looking at next service so took the initiative and got them from the UK. Unfortunately none of the USA models share the GT rears so ours are an Aust/Euro combination only. USA have 250mm & 260mm only and crazily UK GTs have different rears again!
I'm sure you've done some of the basic work and know the brake model is 1KD 255x10mm rotors. Weirdly VAG manufacture 2 different 255x10 rotors in the 5x112 pattern, one for Golfs and the other Passats. Net result they are different hat heights so aren't interchangeable at all.

Anyway, to stop my waffle and to cut a long story short I sourced mine from eurocarparts.com along with the rear brake piston compressor & M18 triple square bit (my existing kit only went up to M12). All parts are Pagid so OEM+ quality.
Rear discs Pagid Part # 54209 GBP44.16 per pair, eurocarparts part # 104441258 Pagid Brake Pads - Euro Car Parts UK
Rear pads Pagid Part # T5075 GBP16.69 per axle set, eurocarparts part # 101440328 Pagid Brake Pads - Euro Car Parts UK

Also, as this stuff is Euro spec they should be lower dust than Aus OEM. I believe Aust delivered VWs have followed the USA lead by having silent brakes but the tradeoff is soooo much dust. I believe this is the reverse from Europe. I still haven't fitted mine so can't confirm for sure.

The reason I have to recommend them is I also ordered some other bits and pieces which they screwed up and only sent half the order leaving behind the brake discs and a rear wheel hub assembly (don't ask!). Anyway, I was ready to rip into them but sent a polite but firm email, they were extremely apologetic and sent the discs and hub priority DHL which was delivered in Perth Monday after being despatched ex UK on Friday, no charge to me of course.
If you do get in touch with them contact ashish.nandal@eurocarparts.com and let him know I referred you as I said I would after he fixed it so satisfactorily.

I'll be ordering front discs and pads through the USA as they have a much better range and prices are excellent for aftermarket stuff.

Anyway, hope this info is helpful and may save you some running around.

        Cheers,

        Paul

Well that sucks! Makes getting parts for the GT that much harder. Does that mean that If I'm looking for rear pads on an American site such as ECS tuning I would need to look for rear pads for an A3?

I got a GTI rear rotor and caliper put on the back of my car. Should be able to get a caliper second hand easy enough. and if you don't want red brakes you can get them soda blasted clean for about $40.

I just thought that the GT rear brake setup was the same as stock Golf V?

Ah so the caliper is a bolt on, that'd be the way to go if you are keeping the car like me.

Yes, news to me too, benough.
I understood that the GT/GTSport & 2.0 turbo Jetta were identical to the GTIs F & R brakes - other than the colour of the calipers.
I thought there were 3 brake specs: std Golf, performance (GT/GTI/Jetta 2.OT), and R32

So any update on this - can someone verify where I can get a set of ceramic pads for my GT? I too was under the impression that the pads on the GT were identicle to the GTi so I was just going to get a GTi set from ECS tuning - now I don't know.

I can confirm that the Fronts are same as GTI and rears are definitely different. GT rears are 255mm, GTI are 286mm. Any of the popular front pads for the GTI (312mm) will fit (I'm running Hawk HPS) but have had to stick with the Pagid OEM rears as linked by Greg in his earlier post quoting my PM to him.
GT rear brakes designation by VW is CI38 - rear discs are 255 dia x 10mm thickness.

I had no luck finding any aftermarket high performance pads for this brake set although that doesn't mean that they're not available and when I was searching I didn't have too much time up my sleeve. Best bet would be to check out UK forums and websites as they are likely a standard fitment for many Euro/UK models.

I assume this is the same regardless if its the 1.4L GT or the 2.0L GT?

Yep. The majority is identical in the two cars.
