Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • How big is the fuel tank in a Gt golf V

I was running low on diesel today got down to 100 km to empty, when i refueled it took over 50 liters yet it said i had still 100 k in the tank, so how much does the tank really hold ?

55 litres from memory - I think I got 52.5l at the most - I always worry at 10km to empty!

Surely you read the manual Ian?

Yeah I once put 56L into it when I drove for 20km past the "0km to empty"

I *think* it's 52L and there's a 3L reserve. Not sure how it works though.

Ive never driven below 40km's - wouldnt have thought the stuff at the bottom of the tank to be that good - emergency reasons are a different story tho

I can never get over 49, and sometimes i let it run down to distance to empty 10kms. Do you guys continue to fill after the "click" when refueling?

I've managed 30 k past it telling me zero and the needle no longer moving, as I was in the middle of nowhere and it was push on, digest the bottom of the tank crap, or walk.

              It's not recommended, but possible.

You can get a long way on 0K's!

Probably shouldn't, but I'm getting 56L in most tanks, but I fill up the neck a bit also

You might want to query the service station over the accuracy of their pump! ; )

I had to drive for about 20km's past 0km's left before, I was stuck in the middle of nowhere... was a bit worried at the time to say the least!

                    Yeah 55L as mentioned.

Saying you have 100k to go when you had 5 litres in the tank is about right for the TDI.

Yeah, I once put 11.5 litres into a 9 litre fuel container (no, not filled to the brim - just to the 9 litre mark!)
At home I measured 9 litres from a reliably marked jug and the fuel container was only 200mL off...

I know fuel expands and all that...but it does make you wonder.

I'm sure I remember seeing a program where they went and tested a bunch of servo's pumps to see how accurate the filling measurment was..

Within the law they have a margin of error - but not one over filled or filled to the amount indicated. ALL were under.

i stopped driving my car down to 10kms to go,

the fitter at work reckons condensation is a problem if you let run near dry all the time.

it is scary once it gets to zero un-expectantly. like **** i need fuel...

55L is the most i have gotten into it.
